David Harbaugh was born in Madison, IN, on 1 Oct 1826, the oldest of a large family. (1)  He and his brothers were laborers working in the industrialized city of Madison, IN probably exposed to many unhealthy fumes.  David and at least one of his brothers died of consumption.  David and Phebe were married in Madison, Jefferson Co., IN on 16 Feb 1848. (2)  They were living in Madison, Jefferson Co., IN in the 1850 census where he was listed with a real estate value of $500. (3) He made a toast as a volunteer fireman in 1851. (4)  They had purchased a home in 1848 right after they married.  They sold this two room home with a kitchen in 1853 for $400 and moved to Lafayette, Jefferson, IN.  (5)
By 1854 they had moved to Lafayette, IN where there was an ad in the Lafayette Daily Journal for "Harbaugh & Co Boilermaker and sheet iron workers." (6) There was a flood in 1858 which may have destroyed his business.  He was listed in the 1858 city directory of Lafayette,  "Harbaugh, David machinist and boilermaker, east side Ohio bet. Romig and Fountain."  By the 1860 census they had four children, Ellen age 10, Irena, age 7, William, age 4, and Charles J., aged 2 years.  His worth was listed as only $100.  (7)
As stated, he came from a large family where all of his siblings died young.  In 1860 his sister  Martha must have come to live with them, or was at least visiting, when she died in 1860. (8)  She died on the 21st of February 1860. She was 22 yrs. old. Their father, Jacob Harbaugh, died in Madison, IN  the next month on 21 Mar 1860.  David Harbaugh had lost his father and four of his siblings by that time. (9)  He may have contracted consumption from his sister's visit.
On 21 Jul 1866 he and Phebe were selling some land back in Madison to his mother,  that they had inherited from their father. (10) They received $100.  David Harbaugh died 7 months later on 20 Feb 1867. He was 40 years old.  In the 1867 Lafayette City Directory he had been listed as a boilermaker residing on 2nd north of the railroad.  An obituary ran in the Madison Daily Courier saying he had died of consumption. (11) A coffin was purchased for $22, but there is no record of where he was buried. (12)
By the 1870 census Phebe listed her personal worth as $ 0. Ellen had married and Irena was apparently living with her. William, who was 14, was working at a nearby farm.  Charles was 12 and Martha 8.  What is unusual is there there was another person in the household who had not been listed in 1860.  Eloisa was 14, the same age as William who was working on a nearby farm.
Phebe was listed in the 1871 directory for Lafayette and then there are no more listings for any Harbaugh in the subsequent Lafayette city directories.
