Joseph Hegeman

The mother of Joseph Hegeman, Lucretia Dollan, had been captured by the
Indians on 2 Aug 1689 in the French and Indian War. She and her daughter
Jane were held by the Indians at fort Penobscot in Maine for two years. In 1691
Lucretia was sold to the French and taken to Quebec. Meanwhile, Joseph's
father, Denys Hegeman, was in New York. In 1691 he got permission to go to
Pemaquid (Maine) to look for his wife. However, when he arrived he also
was taken prisoner by a Frenchman and transported to Quebec City where he was
imprisoned with his wife. Lucretia gave birth to Joseph on 4 Mar 1693.
Joseph was baptized by a Catholic priest the next day. (1) Denys Hegeman
was then transported to France where he was held until 1693. Lucretia left
Quebec City with her young son Joseph on 4 Sep 1694 and eventually got back to
Flatbush. Her daughter Jane had apparently died sometime while in captivity.
Joseph Hegeman married at Flatbush on 4 June 1714 to Alida Andriesz. (2) He lived in
Flatbush in 1738 and moved to New Jersey the next year. He and his wife were members of Raritan
Dutch Church 1739, and he was appointed Justice of the Peace in Somerset County,
N.J. on 1 Dec. 1739. (3) Joseph and his wife Alida were witnesses to the baptism
of their grandson Joseph Hegeman, son of Andries Hegeman on 14 Jan 1743 and to
the baptism of their grandson Joseph Van Arsdale son of their daughter Lucretia
married to Gerret Van Arsdale on 8 Oct 1751. (4) So far, no records on Joseph
Hegeman have been found after 1751.
