Ralph Hemingway may have indentured himself as a servant
in order to gain passage to the colonies in 1633. He was recorded as "Ralph
Hinningway a man servant" when he was admitted to the church. (1) If
he was a "man servant" he did not remain so for very long. He married
Elizabeth Hewes on 5 Jul 1634. (2) And, he took the oath of freeman on 3
Sep 1634. (3) The tax records for 1639 show him owning 16 acres of land. (4)
Sometime between 1642-1645 the town of Roxbury decided to fund a free school.
Ralph Hemingway was on the donator's list for £00 02 00. (5)
He wrote his
will on 4 May 1677 and when the inventory of his estate was presented to court
in July, it stated Ralph had died "month Jun 1678." (6) He left his estate to
his wife during her lifetime with his son John to manage it. John had been
taking care of both of them in their "age." He only left 20 shillings and
his love to his son Samuel because "God hath dwelt bountifully with Samuel."
Other children named in the will were Joshua, Elizabeth Holbrook and daughter
Ruth. His inventory included about 65 acres of land, etc. valued at £ 170
19 6.
The wife of Ralph Hemingway died 2 Jan 1684/5 at the age of 82 which
would have made her born about 1603. (7)
