Sarah Jane Lindsay, born in Middlesex, had moved to Maryborough, Wellington, Ontario by 1861. They were still there in 1871. She was one of seven children born to James and Mary Lindsay, Sarah being the only daughter. When she was 21 she married David Shaw, the bailiff in Teeswater, the same town where she was then living. Seven months later her son William Mellis Shaw was born. Eventually the marriage must have fallen apart. Neither she nor David can be found in the 1881 census. However, according to the 1900 census she married Richard Claxton in 1885. and migrated to the United States in 1890.
In 1900 she is living in blue Earth, MN with Richard Claxton and her daughter, Georgie. There is also a niece, Eva Lindsay, living with them. She and her husband and daughter are still in Blue Earth, MN in the 1905 State Census for MN.
By 1920 she and Richard had separated for he is living in a boarding house in Rice Lake, Barron, MN.
