John Lothrop was baptized on 30 Dec 1584 at St Mary's Church, Etton,
Yorkshire, Eng. (1) He received his B.A. at Cambridge University in 1605
and M.A. in 1609. He married Hannah Howse on 16 Oct 1610 and had 8
children with her. (2) First ordained a Deacon by the Bishop of Lincoln,
he became Curate of Bennington, Hertfordshire in 1607 and Curate of Parish
Church at Egerton, Kent, England about 1611.
In 1623 he left the church of
England and subscribed to the doctrines of the Independents. He was
arrested along with 24 others on 22 Apr 1632 and put in the old Clink prison in
Newgate. He was given permission to visit his dying wife but then again
imprisoned. (3) In the spring of 1634 those arrested with him were
released but he was detained. Eventually he was given bond and left for
the colonies on the Giffith, arriving on 18 Sep 1634.
John Lothrop
remarried to Ann sometime around 1635 and had 7 children with her. She was
admitted to the church in Scituate on 14 Jun 1635. He died in Barnstable
on 8 Nov 1653. He left a will which had not been signed but on 7 Mar 1654

(3) "In New England's Memorials" by Nathaniel Morton, published in 1669, he says -:
"His wife fell sick, of which sickness she died. He procured liberty of the bishop to visit his wife before her death, and commended her to God by prayer, who soon gave up the ghost. At his return to prison, his poor children, being many, repaired to the bishop at Lambeth and made known unto him their miserable condition by reason of their good father's being continued in close durance, who commiserated their condition so far as to grant him liberty, who soon after came over unto New England".
