After the death of his mother (his father had died long before in TN) David and his wife pretty much raised his four younger brothers and sisters. "David was a Civil War doctor, and went to Mexico after the Civil War with a price on his head, - which explains some of the letters in this book I referred to - writing to Seguin to his two old maid sisters, who were trying to eke out a living in Seguin after the war."
