Genealogical and Biographical Record of New London County, Connecticut, 1905
pg 42
"In the record of his marrige at Charleston, Mass, to Hopestill Merrick, Oct 7, 1664, his second name, which is the very common Welsh name Rhys --- often found there written Rees ---- is spelled Rose and he seems to have adopted and retained that method of spelling it to distingquish his family from the James Morgan family. After his marriage he and his wife removed to New London, taking up their residence in the western part of the town known since as Waterford. He was one of the first settlers, and lived there until his death in the year 1698, leaving his widow, Hopestill, and sons, John, Richard Rose, Benjamin and Several daughters."
Another book "A History of the Family Morgan, from the year 1098 to present time" by James Appleton Morgan about 1902 says the same exact thing. However the paragraph begins with "Richard Rose Morgan, son of Qwilim ap Philip Morgan ( a scion of Tredegar)."
This was later disputed saying a Welch son of a William or a grandson of a Philip would not have a patronymic name of Rhys.
