Information about John Moulthrop or Mowthropp is mostly speculation.
All we really know is that John Mowthropp of Egton married Elizabeth Hardie on
21 Nov 1605 in Boynton, Yorkshire, England. (1) And, they did have a son named
Matthew Mowthropp baptized on 6 Mar 1607/8 in Bridlington which is about 3 miles
from Egton. (2) However, this son may not be the Matthew Mowthrop who
married on 13 May 1633 in Wrawby, Lincolnshire, England. The two cities of
Bridlington and Wrawby are about 70 miles apart, and none of Matthew's supposed
siblings born in Bridlington can be traced to Wrawby. The only records
found in Wrawby are of Matthew's marriage and the baptism of three of his
children; Matthew, Dorothy and Elizabeth. There is also a record of a Mary
Mowthropp marrying a John Goodwin on 27 Jan 1640. She is most likely a
sister of the Matthrew Moulthrop of Wrawby, but again there is no record of her
in Bridlington. There is also a Jane "Nelthorp" marrying a John Redman in Wrawby
in 1629 and there have been assumptions that she was the Jane Moulthrop, sister
of Matthew, who was born in Nov 1606. She was married under the name of "Joane
Nelthorp" and there were several people named Nelthorp living in Wrawby at that
time. (3)
John Mowthrop may have been married to a Jane before he married Elizabeth Hardie
in November1605 since an Elizabeth Mowthropp was born on 11 May 1605 to a mother
Jane (4) and died the same day, with her mother dying two days later. (5)
Supposedly this John Mowthrop had a will probated on 28 Mar 1631. (6) However,
what the American Genealogist Vol 74 # 2 really says is that John Mowthrop died
before 28 Mar 1631. (7) In Bridlington, an Elizabeth Mowthropp
was baptized to a father John on 10 Feb 1627, a John Mowthropp was baptized to a
father John on 10 Feb 1629 and a John Mowthropp was baptized to a father John on
28 Mar 1631. (8) (9) (10) John, the father of these three children, could have
been this John Mowthrop, or a son of this John Mowthrop, or even a cousin.
But we have a record of the deaths of both John Mowthrops. John Mowthropp
ye younger was buried 15 Jan 1652 (11) and another John Mowthropp was buried 13
Feb 1654. (12)

Little specific is known of John Mowthrop; however, it seems likely that he was born about 1580. It is further believed that he was married twice, first to Jane, whose maiden name remains unknown and who died in May of 1605 (apparently in childbirth), and, second to Elizabeth Hardie on November 21, 1605. Within this context, some family researchers have identified Boynton and Bridlington in Lincolnshire as corresponding locations. However, as asserted with some emphasis by Mr. Robert Eyre, these towns are both located in close proximity to each other in the East Riding of Yorkshire and not in Lincolnshire. Therefore, it is probable that John Mowthrop was born and married in Yorkshire and moved south to Lincolnshire later in life. (Indeed, this is consistent with the etymology and origin of the surname as proposed above.) Subsequently, his will was probated on March 28, 1631. Within this context, John Mowthrop has been identified as the ancestor of the Moulthrop family of colonial New Haven in work recently published in The American Genealogist by Patricia Law Hatcher.
