There was a Matthew Moulthrop baptized 6 Mar 1607/8 in Bridlington, Yorkshire, England to "Johanis Mowthropp." (1) However, there is no proof or even evidence that this is the correct Matthew Moulthrop since Matthew married in Wrawby and all the rest of that family remained in Bridlington.  Matthew married in Wrawby, Lincolnshire, England to Jane Nicholl on 13 May 1633. (2) His occupation was listed as glover, the same occupation as his father-in-law, Thomas Nicholl. (3) Their oldest son, Matthrew Moulthrop was baptized there the next year on 24 Feb 1633/4. They had two more children before they emigrated to New England.  Colonial Families records they were in New England by 1639. (4)
The 1641 map of New Haven shows where the family of Mathew Moulthrop settled.(5)  In 1652 he purchased the home of William Tuttle which can also be seen on the map. (5)
The will of Matthew Moulthrop, was written 21 Dec 1668, and mentioned his daughter Elizabeth Gregory, daughter Mary, and son Mathew Moulthrop.  He also mentioned his servant Joseph Abbott as well as an Abigail Thompson.  His wife, Jane Moulthrop, wrote her will in Feb 1669 also mentioning her son Matthew as well as Hannah and John, children of her son Matthew.  She also named her daughters Elizabeth and Mary. There was a reference to William, Henry and Hannah Luddington.  And, there was also a reference to Abigail Tompson.  His estate was valued at £ 304 05. (7)

In 1640 Reverend Samuel Eaton had fifty acres granted in the first meadow toward Totoket, at which place lands were also given to William Tuttle, who settled at Stony River about 1645; to Jasper Crayne and Benjamin Lingo.  The former had his house on the east side of the green, but in 1652 sold to Matthew Moulthrop and removed to Branford.  All of Tuttle's five sons also removed, except Joseph.
