John McKinnie

John McKinnie was born about 1704 most likely in Isle of Wight County, Virginia. He was the son of Barnaby Mckinnie. There is ample evidence for this fact. In an an article for Historical Southern Families, John Bennet Boddie writes a well sourced account of the MacKinnie family. (1)  On 28 Oct 1736 he sold land to his father Barnaby Mckinnie. (2) Much later in 1799 a deed shows that Patience Geddy was the daughter of John McKinnie and granddaughter of Barnaby Mckinnie. (3) He married Mary Parrish, the widow of William Parrish, sometime before 30 Dec 1736 since on that date her deceased husband's estate was divided between his widow, Mary McKinnie, and his daughter, Sarah Parish. (4)
John died sometime before February 28, 1753 when his will was probated leaving his estate to his wife Mary, his son Barnaby and his daughters Patience, Mary and Martha and his " daughter-in-law " Angelina Parrish. (5) The term daughter-in-law most likely is a stand-in for step-daughter. In her will written on October 23, 1754 Mary Mckinnie refers to her daughter Angelina Pope.( Angelina Parrish had married Barnaby Pope ) as well as her son Barnaby Mckinnie, and her daughters Mary, Patience and Martha. These are the same children mentioned in John McKinnie's will except in his Angelina is a step-daughter and in Mary's she is a daughter, so it's logical to assume that Angelina was Mary's daughter by William Parrish. (6)
There is a slight problem in that in William Parrish's will written in January 1636 he referred only to his wife Mary and to his daughter Sarah who was younger than seventeen years of age, so it's quite likely that Mary was pregnant with Angeline at the time William died and when she married John McKinnie sometime in 1736.
