Jonathan Palmer
by Susan Brooke
Feb 2023
Jonathan Palmer was christened 11 Mar 1722 in Rowley, MA with his father
listed as Samuel Palmer. (1) Shortly after his birth, his parents moved to
Mendon, MA. (2) His father died there eight years later sometime before 4 Mar 1730.
Jonathan was 8 years old. A guardian was appointed to Jonathan Palmer four
years later on 11 Aug 1734 in Mendon, MA. (3)
There is no proof that he moved to Concord, MA but there was a Jonathan Palmer of Concord, MA who was
admitted to the church there in 1642. He was about the same age
as the Jonathan Palmer of Mendon. When tracing this Jonathan Palmer of
Concord we
find that he died on 15 May 1807 "at the age of 90." (4) The Jonathan Palmer of
Mendon was christened in 1722. Thus the two men named Jonathan
Palmer are about the same age and probably the same person.
As stated, he was in Concord, MA by 1742 and married Esther Laughton there on 10
Jul 1744. (5) They had five children and then she must have died because he
married Elizabeth Hawkins on 29 Nov 1752. (5) According to the History of
Waitsfield, VT he was a blacksmith from 1747-1771 in Concord, MA. (6) On 12 Oct
1773 he was granted land in Alexandria, Grafton, NH. (7)
In 1790 he was listed in the census records for Alexandria, Grafton, NH with 3
males over 16, 1 male under 16 and 1 female. (8) Alexandria, NH is about 25
miles from Lebanon, NH and two of his daughters married in Lebanon, Grafton, NH.
Mehitable Palmer married Richard Lyman in Grafton on 2 Apr 1784 and Hannah
Palmer married Ichabod Church in Grafton on 8 Oct 1787.
By 1795 Jonathan Palmer and his sons were living in Waitsfield, Washington, VT.
(9) Jonathan Palmer died there on 15 May 1809 the "age of 90." (4)
