Andrew Patterson

Andrew Patterson was born about 1659 in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, England. (1) He was a Scottish Presbyterian and refused to take an oath to the King and was thus imprisoned in the Tollbooth at Leith. (2) Two other men named Patterson were shot by Captain Bell about the same time; Robert Patterson and his son William Patterson. (2)  They may have been related.
In May 1685 the Laird of Pitlochie in Scotland was given authority to transport those who were refusing to take the oath to the king to New Jersey.  He chartered the Henry and Francis which sailed on 5 Sep 1685.  Many on board were in poor condition due to their confinements and the conditions on board were bad.  The meat began to putrefy and many came down with a fever.  Three or four bodies were cast overboard every day.  Seventy people died at sea including the Laird of Pitlochie and his wife. (3)  But John Patterson survived the 15 weeks at sea and arrived in Perth Amboy in Dec 1685.
He soon moved to Stratford, Fairfield, Ct where he married Elizabeth Peet on 19 Feb 1690. (2) In 1691 "He bought of Richard Blackleach sixteen acres of land on 'the west side of Stonibrooke Hill. "
His son Charles died before 23 Feb 1726/7 and Andrew Patterson was named guardian of his two young children, Andrew and Elizabeth.  (4) He gave his "loving son John Patterson" 1 and 1/2 acres in 1734. (5) Then on 8 May 1742 Andrew Patterson wrote his will.  He had already given most of his estate to his sons and daughters. In his will he gave his moveable estate to his beloved wife, Elizabeth and left land to his grandsons: Abraham, James and Elnathon who were son of his deceased son, Charles Patterson.  Sons, William and John Patterson were named executors. (6) His inventory valued at £397.7 included 14 books and 6 acres of land. (7)

(1) The gravestone of Andrew Patterson reads that he was 87 when he died in 1746.

(2)  Andrew Patterson of Stratford, Conn. and the First Four Generations of his Descendants by Elisha G. Patterson, 1892

Andrew Patterson refused to take an oath of loyalty to King James II and was thus sent to the New World. "Thus, on the 18ty of December, 1685 (according to the diary of his fellow passenger, Robert McEwen), Andrew Patterson, at 26 years of age, landed at Perth Amboy. They were received coldly by the loyalist residents of that place, and for a short time enjoyed the hospitality of the people of the town of (probably) Woodbridge. Patterson and McEwen, having heard in Scotland of the greater degree of religious freedom enjoyed in Connecticut, proceeded there on foot, and on the 18th of July, 1686, arrived at and made their future home in 'ye old Town of Stratford.' "

In the Town records he, as Sergt. Andrew Patterson, is recorded as School Committeeman in 1717.  He and his sons William and John were Town 'proprietors,' and drew their proportion of undivided land, Novemeber, 1738.  February 19, 1690, at age 31 years ofa ge, he married Elizabeth Peet, who came from Derby England in 1635.  He died in Stratford, and, with a granddaughter and grandson, lies in the old congregational Burying Place, in inscription on his memorial stone reading.

"Here lies ye body of Mr. Andrew Patterson, who departed this Life, December ye 2d, Anno Domni 1746. Aged 87 years."
