Jannetje Rapalje
by Susan Brooke
Jun 2021
Jannetje Rapalje was born in New Amsterdam on 18 Aug 1629. (1) Her parents,
Joris Rapalje and Catalyna Trico, had come to New Amsterdam in 1624. When
Jannetje was only thirteen years old she married Rem Jansen on 21 Dec 1642. (2)
And her first child, Sara Rapalje, was born 12 Mar 1645, when Jannetje was still
five months shy of her sixteenth birthday. (3) She and Rem Jansen had sixteen
children over a range of thirty years. In fact she was having children even
after some of her grandchildren had been born. In an age when many women
died in childbirth, Jannetje survived and outlived her husband. Rem died
in 1681when Jannetje was fifty-two and her youngest child was six years old.
Jannetje was actively involved in the baptisms of children of her siblings and
Rem's siblings. In 1682 she was a witness for her brother, Jeronimus. She
was also a witness for baptisms of babies named Rem born to her husband's
siblings, Jan and Hillitie. (4)
In 1683 some of her husband's property was assessed to her. (5) And in 1694 she
and some of her children were conveying land to two other children: Isaac and
Jeremiah. (6) After that there is no record of Jannetje Rapalje.

The Bogart Family Chapter by Tunis Gysbert Bogaert and his descendants.
Compiled by John Albert Bogart, 1959 V History of the Bogart
property at the Wallabout, in Bushwick and Brooklyn, page 81-82
The settlement of Bedford where Tunis and Aert T. Middagh acquired 100 acres of
land in 1654, dates from the year 1662 when Joris Jansen Rapalje, Tunis Gysbert
Bogaert, Cornelius Jacobsen, Hendrick Sweers and Michael Hans Bergen, asked the
governor for a grant of unoccupied woodland situated in the rear of Rapalje's
farm. The governor made the grant with the stipulation that the inhabitants
should not make a new hamlet. It is evident that the petition was granted,
but according to the records of New Amsterdam, there seems to be no indication
of the extent of the property given to Bogaert and his associates. If
Bogaert received a portion of this land as claimed, the files of the Secretary
of State at Albany, New York do not reveal any title or conveyance to him.
Woodlots were often granted in those day on a temporary, utility basis,
especially when virgin woods were available or adjacent to occupied property of
the settlers.
In view of the foregoing, we shall confine the history of the Bogaert property
to the western part originally granted to Hans Hansen Bergen, the evolution of
which began in 1662 when a part of it was sold to Rem Vanderbeek. In 1698,
Bogaert willed or transferred the greater part of it to his son Gysbert T.
Bogaert. From this point on it descended through a chain of circumstances
until it was gradually disposed of by the family over many years. The
details of these transactions reveal some interesting events in which the
property was subjected to successive ownership.
In 1694, Rem Vanderbeek's widow, Jannetje Rapalje and her children, conveyed the
property to two of their number, Isaac and Jeremiah Remsen. In 1704, Isaac
sold his share of the estate to his brother Jeremiah Remsen who thus became the
sold owner of the paternal farm. At the time of the conveyance of
Vanderbeek in 1694, Tunis Gysbert Bogaert was still in possession of the greater
part of the original Bergen tract, Remsen's property (Vanderbeek's) being
bounded on the north by Bogaert's land as indicated on the map.
