Based on the age recorded when he died, Samuel Russell was born about 1671 in New Haven Colony. (1) He married Esther Tuttle on 27 Feb 1694. (2) He was about 23 and Esther 21. They had ten children. However, four of their first six children died in infancy between 1701-1704. Two of their children, Joseph and Ralph, died about two months apart in 1704. (3) Samuel was active within the community. He was on a committee to "Seat the meeting house" in 1717 etc. (1) He died 26 June 1724 at the age of 53. On 3 Aug 1725 his wife Esther was in court presenting his will as the executor of his estate. (4) Named in bequests were sons, Joseph, Daniel and Abel, and daughter. Mary. Minor children. Joseph, Mary, Daniel and Abel, chose Esther for guardian. (1)

"Esther Tuttle, b. April 9, 1672; living, 1740, side deed to Thos. Robinson; m. Feb. 27, 1694, Samuel, s. of Ralph and Mary (Hitchcock) Russell, b. 1671; d. June 26, 1724, a. 53. He was of E. Haven. In 1717 he was on the committee with Samuel Clark and four others, to 'Seat the meeting house,' Also in 1714, on the committee about town boundaries. 'He lived on the lot,' says Dodd, 'now owned by Thomas Barnes.' His will was proved in 1724, wid., Esther, execx., to whom he devises sundry parcels of land and half of the dwelling house; to Samuel, 'the farm I bought of Wm. Roberts,' etc.; to dau. Esther Way Russell, lands, etc., and named in bequests, sons, Joseph, Daniel and Abel, and dau. Mary; date, June 22, 1724; Minor chil. Joseph, Mary, Daniel and Abel, chose Esther for guard. In 1740 Thomas Robinson, Matthew Rowe, Nathaniel Barnes, John Howell, Esther Russell and Abel Russell agree to divide land formerly belonging to Samuel Russell."
