Barent Jurriaens Ryder
by Susan Brooke
Jul 2021

On 6 May 1658 "Barent Jurriaens" signed with his mark as an indentured servant to work as a farm laborer for Elbert Elberts in New Netherlands.  (1) In that record he was recorded as unmarried and as from  "Reijderlandt."  He was to receive free passage, earn 150 guilders a year for three years, and be given free accommodations in the house of his master. It is assumed he was, at least, a teenager by this date.
He married Aeltje Stevense van Voorhees about 1673 and was a magistrate in Gravesend that same year and again in 1679.  He was one of the freeholders of Gravesend in 1680 and took the oath of allegiance in 1687. (2)  On 9 Aug 1696 he and his wife Aeltje Steevens were witnesses at the birth of their grandson, Bernardus Gerretse in the Old First Dutch Reformed Church of Brooklyn. (3)
He is listed on the 20 Dec 1706 land assessment list of Gravesend as "Barent Royde" with 142 acres of land while his son-in-law, Samuel Garretse had 64 acres of land. (4)
It was recorded in the book by Teunis Bogart written in 1881 that on "Oct 7, 1707 "Barent Ryde" of Gravesend sold Nicholas Stilwell for £30 two 44 acres lots, as per Gravesend records." (5) Oct 1707 is often taken as the date of death of Barent Ryder.
