John Shaw

Joseph Shaw b. 1806

Robert Shaw b. 1811

In  "A History of Simcoe County" by Andrew F. Hunter, 1909, there are three men named Shaw listed as settlers to Innisfil  before 1837.   John, Robert and Joseph Shaw were listed in Concession 8 with John on lot 19 and Robert and Joseph on lot 20.  They are most likely three brothers.

In the Wesley Methodist Church baptismal records for Innisfil, Joseph and Eliza Shaw have a daughter named Matilda born 08 Jan 1844 and baptized 07 Apr 1844 by Rev. R Thompson.
John and Ellen Shaw have a son David born 02 Mar 1847 and baptized 03 Oct 1847 and another son, John, born 04 Aug 1844 and baptized 23 Sep 1844 by Rev. R. Thompson.  These records are on reel # 1, pg 394-395.  There is no proof that John and Joseph Shaw are brothers, but it seems likely.

John Shaw's oldest daughter was Agnes Shaw born about 1841.  Agnes married Erastus Bell around 1860 and is living in Lockport, Niagara, NY in the 1860 NY census.  The next listing on the census page is for a Robert Shaw, who was born about 1812 in Ireland.  It may be that this Robert Shaw was her uncle. It is also interesting that Joseph's full name is "Joseph Harper Shaw" and Robert's full name is "Robert H. Shaw" and both men have sons with a middle name of Harper.  Joseph has a son named "William Harper Shaw" and Robert has a son named "Robert Harper Shaw."  However, the naturalization record for the Robert Shaw of Lockport says he immigrated to the United States in 1829 which would mean he left Simcoe, Canada well before the 1837 listing for "settlers of Innisfil before 1837".  Also, the Lockport Robert Shaw was born 7 Jun 1811 which would mean he left his brothers to immigrate at the age of 18.  He may not be the Robert Shaw of Innisfil.
