Timothy Shufflin
by Susan Brooke
Dec 2020
Timothy Shufflin was born in Ireland. He came to Maryland in 1808.
During the War of 1812 he was listed as a British Alien, aged 28, shoemaker,
having lived in the United
State for 5 years. (1) "Timothy Shafling's" application for naturalization was recorded 2 Aug 1813
in the Court Minutes of Frederick Co, MD. Henry Shufling's
application was approved the next year.(2) "Timothy Shufling"
and "Henry Shufling" of Baltimore applied for land in Wooster, Wayne
County, OH on the same day in 1817. (3) We know Timothy Shufflin took possession fairly soon thereafter
as he is recorded in the Wayne County Court Journal on 8 May 1819. (4)
"Timothy and Henry Shufflin"
were paying taxes in Wayne
Co. OH in 1820. (5) They both had land in range 13 in connecting townships of 16
and 17. Timothy had 174 acres. Henry had 320. There are DNA
matches connecting them. (6) They were brothers. And they may be the
sons of James Shufflin and Anne Newsam of Dublin, Ireland. If so, his
father died about the year Timothy Shufflin was born.
"Timothy Shuflin" married Sarah Jane Kelley of Ohio Co. on 11 Sep 1821 in West Alexander, Washington Co. PA. (7) He appeared in various tax record in OH. (8) In April 1840 Timothy and Sarah Jane "Shufflin" sold some of their land for $1600 and moved to Pope County, IL. (9) In June 1840 Timothy Shufflin purchased 80 acres of land in Pope County IL for $400. (10) He died shortly after on 15 Oct 1840 leaving 12 children aged 18 to an infant. (11) His estate was sold 19 Dec 1840. (12) Sarah Jane was appointed guardian of the youngest 6. (13) The estate of Timothy Shuflin paid $40 a year to the widow, Sarah Jane, for each child. She was also paid an additional $40 each for boarding her other children, Eliza and "Kisea," who were deemed old enough to choose another guardian but who had not done so. (14) Sarah Jane remarried to Edmund Douley 4 Jul 1843, who was also paid by the estate of Timothy Shufflin for keeping "5 of the heirs." (15)
There is pretty strong evidence that the parents of Timothy Shufflin were James Shufflin and Anne Newsam.
a. Timothy Shufflin and Sarah Jane Kelley married in West Alexander, Washington Co, PA by the Justice of the Peace on September 11, 1821. Their daughter Eliza Shufflin Hannahs died as a member of the Methodist church according to her obituary, so most likely the family was Protestant.
b. There is only one Shufflin family recorded in the right time period in the Ireland genealogy base and they were protestants. (16) Timothy Shufflin and Henry Shufflin were brothers and they were both definitely from Ireland. The James Shufflin and Ann Newsom found in these records are the right age to be the parents of these two brothers.
c. The Irish had a custom of naming their first son after the father's father and the second son after the mother's father. Henry Shufflin named his first son James Shufflin. Timothy and Sarah Jane named their first son Henry, probably after Timothy's older brother, Henry Shufflin. (Timothy Shufflin may have never known his father since James Shufflin died the year Timothy Shufflin was born.) Their second son was named John Titus Shufflin making us think John Titus must have been somehow connected to the family.
d. A
John Titus first showed up in Donegal, Washington, PA in the 1798 Pennsylvania Direct Tax. (17)
He remained in Donegal for the 1800, 1810 and 1820 census records at
which time he had nine children living with him. West Alexander is a
census-designated place in Donegal Township, Washington Co. PA.
Timothy Shufflin
immigrated to Baltimore, Maryland around 1808 and was still there in 1817 when
he had land surveyed in Wayne County, OH.
He was in a court case in Wayne County in 1819 and is listed in the 1820
tax records for Wayne County, OH but for some reason traveled back over 100 miles
from Wooster, OH to West Alexander,
(in Donegal, WAshington Co.) PA
to marry Sarah Jane Kelley in September of 1821. John
Titus lived close by.
Timothy Shufflin had been living in Baltimore before he
moved to OH. Baltimore is over 260 miles away from Donegal, Washington,
PA. The John Titus in Donegal, Washington, PA was born before 1765. (18)
Timothy Shufflin was born about 1785. James Shufflin died the year
he was born. It's possible John Titus was a guardian or father figure and
Timothy Shufflin was travelling to Donegal, Washington, PA to see him. The
will of John Titus was probated 29 Apr 1822. Timothy Shufflin married in West
Alexander, Washington, PA on 11 Sep 1821.
e. There was also a John Titus in the Dublin, Ireland area at the time that James Shufflin and Ann Newsom were living there. A John Titus and his wife Sarah had two daughters baptized in the Protestant St Luke Parish, the same parish where James Shufflin was buried. (19) He could have been the father of the John Titus that was in Donegal, Washington, PA by 1798.
f. Timothy Shufflin and Sarah Jane Kelley named their last child Hiram Newton Shufflin. Timothy's supposed mother's maiden name was Newsom.

History of Washington County, PA pg 822
John
H. Titus, one of the representative citizens of Donegal Township, who has been
living on his present farm since 1888, is a member of one of the early pioneer
families of this section, and was born in Donegal Township, Washington County,
PA., Apr. 2, 1849, and is a son of Isaac and Elizabeth (Hayborn) Titus.
The
parents of Mr. Titus were both born in Washington County. The grandfather,
John Titus, was an early settler here and the late Isaac Titus
engaged in farming for many years in the same locality. Isaac Titus was a
Republican and he served in public office, being a school director for many
years and also was a road commissioner. Of the five children born to Isaac
Titus and wife, three survive and all reside in Donegal Township: Margaret J.,
John H. and Joseph.
John H. Titus attended the district schools in Donegal
Township and from youth has been engaged in farm pursuits. He is now the
owner of old and interesting landmarks of pioneer days, now in a state of
disintegration. He is an excellent judge of agricultural conditions in his
section and is largely interested in sheep raising, keeping on an average about
100 head.
On Oct. 25,. 1888, Mr. Titus was united in marriage with Miss Laura
V. McConn, who was born in West Virginia, a daughter of J. Wilkes McConn, and
they have had three children, of whom one survives: Mary Florence, who was born
Sept. 28, 1896. Mr. Titus is a Republican in politics and a Presbyterian
in religious faith, attending church at West Alexander.
