We are quite certain that Ralph Tompkins was the grandfather of Mary Foster, the father in law of John Foster and that John Foster had a wife named Martha. On page 9 of the " The Ancestry of Lydia Foster" compiled by John E. Morris ( Hartford Conn. Press of the Case, Lockwood & Brainard Company 1898), he quotes from documents pertaining to the disposition of his estate in Salem Mass in Nov 1666 to the effect that Mary Foster was his granddaughter and the daughter of John Foster.(The original document is an inventory of the estate.Essex County, Massachusetts Probate Records.Vol III p. 379) In the Foster Genealogy by Frederick C Pierce, p. 695, the foolowing quote appears: " This inventory exhibited by Martha Foster ye widdow of ye said John Foster and David Foster his some Executors of his Will ye 4th day of April 1688. Suffolk County file No. 1625." From the same Foster Genealogy, p. 694, we learn that Martha Foster was about 43 years old in 1670 making her year of birth 1627. The document quoted is from Essex Deeds, vol iii, folio 99. The date of baptism for Mary Foster, daughter of John Foster, given in the Foster Genealogy is March 29, 1649. Although the books just referenced both say that John Foster married Martha Tompkins in 1649 and that Mary was their first child they make no mention of any original documentation to prove those assertions. It seems plausible though that Martha at the age of 22 would be having her first child with John Foster.
