Thomas Trowbridge was born in England, the oldest son of Thomas Trowbridge of
Taunton. He came to Massachusetts when he was about four and his younger brother
an infant. His brother, James, was born right after the family arrived. His
father traveled from the Barbados to England and was hardly ever in America. His
father had moved the family to New Haven when Thomas was seven. Thomas' mother
died about this time and with the father gone, the estate and children were left
to the care of a Henry Gibbons, steward. However he neglected his duties causing
the estate to be sued for unpaid debts and leaving the house in decay.
Fortunately his father's friend, Thomas Jeffries, took on the responsibility and
care of the three boys and saw to their education. By the time Thomas was ten,
his father had permanently moved back to England. His father tried to sue Henry
Gibbons for neglect but his father died in 1672 long before the matter was
fianlly settled in 1680. By this time Thomas was 42 and an adult.
Thomas married twice. His first wife, Sarah Rutherford, was 15 and Thomas 25
when they married. She died when Thomas was 55 leaving him with eight children
to raise. He then married Hannah Nash, the widow of Eliphalet Ball and had
another child, Hannah.
Thomas "was an enterprising and successful West India merchant, Justice of the
Quorum, and a man of note." He died at age 70, leaving a large estate.
