Willliam Tuttle, the youngest of Symon Tuttle, was baptized 6 Nov 1607 in Ringstead, Northamptonshire, England. (1) He married Elizabeth about 1629 as their first child, John, was baptized 8 Dec 1631.  Shortly after the birth of their third child, Thomas, they set sail for the Colonies on the ship Planter accompanied by his widowed mother and his brother Richard and family and his first cousin John and family. (2)  They arrived about July 1635. (3) William and his family settled first at Charlestown, then moved on to Boston in 1637 and to New Haven in 1639. He was a farmer and active in civic affairs.  He died suddenly in Jun 1673 without leaving a will.  His estate was valued at £449 8s. 6d. The real estate was valued at £274 62. 8d. The estate was divided between his widow, Elizabeth, sons Nathaniel, John, Jonathan, Thomas, Joseph, David, Benjamin, and Simon and daughters Sarah, Anne, Mercy and Elizabeth. (4) After his death some of his children showed real signs of mental instability. In 1676. three years after his death, his son Benjamin, took an ax to his sister Sarah, killing her. He was  found guilty and hung on 13 Jun 1676.  In 1687 his son David asked the court to allow his brother Thomas to take care of his estate since he felt incompetent to do so himself.  On 23 Jun 1691 his daughter Mercy took three swings of an ax at her 17 year old son, Samuel, with him dying six days later. His daughter, Elizabeth, was pregnant with another man's child when she married in 1667.  In 1691 she became one of the first divorced women in the Colonies. (5)

pg 77
In 1656 William bought from Joshua Atwater a mansion house, home lot, barn, and other lands in the Yorkshire Quarter.  That homestead served the family until after Elizabeth died.  William died at New Haven in 1673 at the age of 66.  His death was apparently unexpected because he left no will and was in court only two weeks before his death to complete a land transaction.  Because he had sold or conveyed most of his property to his children before he died, his estate was valued at £450, less than expected for his rank."

As the author goes on to say, "several of their children left an array of bizarre court records."

David was "incompetent."

Benjamin in April 1676, took an ax to his sister Sarah and killed her. "He was tried by a jury and hanged for murder that same year, after he willed all of his property to his sister Elizabeth.

His sister Mercy, who witnessed Sarah's murder, would fourteen years later kill her own son Samuel by striking him on the head with an ax.

A few months later Elizabeth's husband, Richard Edwards, with great scandal and notoriety, would be granted a divorce from Elizabeth on the grounds that she was pregnant before he married her, that she was frequently adulterous after the marriage, and that she had often threatened to murder him while he was asleep."
