"Cornelius Jansz Van Arsdalen and his family appear to have removed to the new Dutch colony at Conewago, in York (now Adams) County, Pennsylvania in a large company of settlers from Somerset County, New Jersey.  This company appears to have included his brothers Garret, Johannis, and Isaac, and at least his sister Alte who married Christian Snedeker at or before moving to Conewago.
Cornelius later relocated to the small Dutch community near Sheperdstown, Berkeley County, Virginia (now West Virginia).  In fact, he may not have lived at Conewago for very long, if at all.  In the March 9, 1771 will of brother Johannes and the May 27, 1772 inventory of brother Isaac's estate (both at Conewago), it was their cousin Cornelius Simonsz Van Aersdalen who performed duties, not their brother Cornelius. (The signatures on the documents match the signature on Cornelius Simonsz van Aersdalen's will.)

"Between 1765 and 1770 Johannis and his family removed to the new Dutch colony at Conewago.  He is likely the "John Vanarsdalan" listed as the defendant in case no 097 brought by plaintiff Hance Hamilton before the York County Court of Common Pleas on January 27, 1767.  Johannis is also likely the "John Vanasdarn" who put his "X" mark on two deeds written on May 25 and 26, 1769 in Frederick County, VA .  He did not choose to stay in Frederick/Berkeley County, as did his brother Cornelius.
Johannis, "of Berwick Township" wrote his will on April 9, 1771.-- The will was proved on June 22, 1772, and is on file at York County, PA, recorded in Will Book C, p. 105.

Jan Van Arsdale

Apr 2021

Jan Van Arsdale was born about 1696 in Flatlands, New York. He was the 2nd son named in the will of his father, Cornelis Sijmonsz Van Aersdalen. (1)  Jan VanArsdale married his first wife, Jannetie Dorland,  in the Flatbush Dutch Reformed Church on 22 Oct 1719. (2)  Her sister Annetje Dorland married Jan's brother, Simon Van Arsdale, a couple of years later. (3) Jan and Jannetje baptized their first child in Flatlands and their second two children in Jamaica, Long Island, but by 1731 they had moved to Somerset, New Jersey where they baptized their fourth child, Johannes, on 28 Feb 1731.  They had six children before Jannetje Dorlant died sometime before 1743.  Jan was left with with some young children.  Johanna, the youngest child of Jannetje Dorlant, had been born in 1737. (4)  Jan remarried to Sarah Wyckoff, widow of  Isaac Van Vorhees, on 3 Apr 1743. (5)  She appears to have had some young children herself. (6) Her father, Pieter Wyckoff, wrote a will in 1753 saying, "I leave to my daughter Sarah's children £300, with the provision that the heirs of Isaac Voorhees shall well and truly execute a deed of conveyance to Abraham Duryee according to their father's bargain." (6) The will indicates Sara had more than one living child, heir of her first husband, Isaac Voorhees.  A Petrus Voorhees, who may have been one of her children, was baptized to Isaac Voorhees and wife Sara in the New Utrecht Church of Brooklyn in 1732, with witnesses Jan Voorhees and his wife Maryki." (7)
Jan and his his second wife, Sara Wyckoff, had a couple more children, both baptized in Somerset, New Jersey.  He then wrote his will on 30 Nov 1749 naming his seven surviving children: Cornelis, Garret, Johannes, Isack, Martie, Johanna and Sara..  He knew his wife   Sara was expecting another child when he wrote the will and he died shortly thereafter as his daughter, Alte Van Arsdalen, was baptized just three months later on 25 Feb 1750 to "Jan Van Aersdaalen and Sara, his widow." (8)  His will was proved the next month on 26 Mar 1750. (9) His brother, Abraham Van Arsdalen, was a witness to the will in 1749 and may have been active in the settlement of the estate. (3) However, Abraham died.  He had written his own will on 4 Apr 1753 which was proved 7 May 1753. Two days later, on 9 May 1753, the inventory of the estate of Jan Van Arsdalen was finally taken. The value of the estate was £688.8.0. (9)
Three of his sons eventually moved to the Dutch Colony of Conewago in York County, PA. (10)

Jan van Aersdalen, son of Cornelis Sijmonsz van Aersdalen and Marretje Dirkse (Ammerman), was born about 1695 in Gravesend, Kings County, Long Island, province of New York.  He may have been the third born son, possibly named after his paternal great-grandfather Jan van Aedsdaele.
------
(CRV notes that Jannetje Dorland's sister, Antje, married Jan van Aersdalen's brother, Simon.  Both couples, consequently, had children named Cornelis, Garret, and Marretje, the latter name serving to honor both grandmothers.  Neither couple had a son named Rem.)
----
The inventory of Jan van Aersdalen was taken after the death of his brother Abraham, who died before 13 April 1753.  This is important because it suggests that Abraham likely assumed the major role in the administration of the estate, at least initially.  The will of Jan's brother Abraham is important to this biography for another reason. Two of Jan's sons, "Gerrit van Aersdalen" and "Jannis van Aersdalen" were witnesses to their uncle Abraham's will written on 04 April 1753 in Somerset County, East Jersey. The abstract of the will and inventory of Abraham van Aersdalen is also preserved in volume XXXII of the previously mentioned book series on p. 332 and names many other members of this family.  The will will be included in the biography of Abraham in the next issue of the Vanguard.
The major point of mentioning this will is to show that Garret and Johannis van Aersdalen, sons of Jan, deceased, were witnesses to this will, indicating that they still lived in the area in 1753.  The date of the inventory of Abraham van Aersdalen was 13 April 1753, which precedes the inventory of Jan van Aersdalen.  Also, Garret and Johannis spelled their names in the same way as their uncle Abraham. (The large Bible mentioned in the will was likely the 1741 Dutch Bible record of Marya (Van Nuys) van Aersdalen. MAT has seen this Bible personally in Lexington, Kentucky in 1996, and it is remarkably well preserved, including Bible entries that were made in the year 1771.  This colonial document is both spectacular and priceless.) Between these two written wills and inventories we find the names of the brothers Jan, Simon, Philip, Abraham, and Jacobus.  These represent all the sons of Cornelis Sijmonsz except for Dirck, and that early in 1753 all but Jan and Dirck were living in the same vicinity.

The following article was also submitted by Barbara L. Van Norsdall, 5050 Tamarus St., Apt. 119, Las Vegas, NV 89119-2036 ([email protected]).
Research indicates that Jan (John) Cornelisz Van Arsdalen's second wife, Sarah Wyckoff Van Voorhees was the daughter of Pieter Wyckoff and Willemtje Jansen Schenck and not Jacob Cornelisz Wyckoff and Willemtje Janse Stryker (Jacob was Pieter's younger brother.). The Vanguard newsletter, volume II, No. 1, page 10, states that after Jan's first wife Jannetje Dorland died, he married Sara (Wyckoff) Van Voorhees, a widow and the daughter of Jacob Cornelisz Wyckoff and Willemtje Janse Stryker (Marriages from the Records of the Reformed Protestant Dutch Church of the town of Flatbush, Kings County, New York - Vol. 1, Josephine C. Frost, 1915, p. 63). It was recorded as: "Joh. Van Aarsdalen, widower, and Sara Van Vooreest, widow. Married April 3, 1743".
Jan Van Arsdalen died in 1750, seven years after he and Sarah married. Sarah and Jan's first son was named Isaac. It is assumed this was done to honor her former husband. The name of Isaac does not appear in the ancestry of Jan or Sarah. Pieter Wyckoff's will, made at Flatlands, May 25, 1753, probated March 23, 1759, is recorded in the New York City Surrogate's office. It is also in Abstract of Wills Vol V 1754-1760, The New York Historical Society, 1896, Page 253. "In the name of God, Amen, May 25, 1753. I, Peter Wyckoff, of Flatlands, in Kings County, yeoman, being sick. My executors are to prepare for my wife Elizabeth sufficient dwelling house, with a good fire place in it, for her own use, for to keep her bedding and household goods in. I also leave her my negro boy Anthony during her life, and after her death whatever remains is for my sons. It is my will that my wife's place of abode shall be among my children or grandchildren and no where else. I leave to my eldest son Nicholas my largest copper kettle, for his birth right. I leave to my daughter Sarah's children £300, with the provision that the heirs of Isaac Voorhees shall well and truly execute a deed of conveyance to Abraham Duryee according to their father's bargain. I leave to my daughter Antye's children £300, with the condition that their father, Nicholas Johnson, shall come to a settlement and division in the Plantation where he now lives with my heirs. I leave to my daughter Jannettie's daughter Willemptie £300. All the rest f my estate I leave to my 6 sons, Nicholas, Peter, John, Jacobus, Cornelius, and Marten. I make my sons John and Nicholas executors." Witnesses, Stephen Schenck, Folkert Strong, Nicholas Schenck. Proved, March 23, 1759.1744, Sara, bp 4 May 1747, and Altje, bp 25 Feb 1750.
Regarding Sarah Wyckoff's mother, according to Virkus' First Families of America: The Compendium of American Genealogy, p 579 Pieter (Peter) son of Claes (Nicholas) Pieterse and Sarah Montfort was married twice, first to Willemfstje Jansan Schenck and second to Anne Elizabeth (unknown). The marriage to Anne Elizabeth was in 1716. A birthdate for Sarah Wyckoff has not been found although dates from 1701 to 1719 have been listed. If the wedding date to Isaac Van Voorhees is correct, 1726, then she would have had to been born before 1711. This would make Willemtje Jansen Schenk her mother.

(10) The Vanguard

Volume 1 # 1 July 1998

Simon's older brother, Jan Cornelisz, had four sons (Cornelis, Garet, Johannis, and Isaac) and it is known that the latter three moved to Conewago.  Cornelis is believed to have moved to Conewago but his whereabouts afterward are unknown.  One of Cornelis's sisters, Alte, married Christian Snedeker, and Snedeker was listed among the inhabitants of Conewago.
Jan's eldest son Cornelis (1721-?) had four sons by wife Femmetje/Phoebe (Van Nuys): John (1752-1826), Isaac (1754-?), Cornelius (1758-?), and Jacobus (1761-?). John appears to have been at Conewago, possibly marrying there, and then moved to the Shepherdstown, WV Dutch colony.  However, he and wife Sarah (Monfoort?) later moved to Preble County, OH with all their children.  John's brothers' whereabouts are unknown to CRV at present.
Jan's son Garret (1727-1787) died at Conewago and left a will which is on file at York.  In it, he lists his wife Gracey (Lucretia Hegeman), living sons Garret and Isaac, deceased son Joseph's daughters Lucretia and Ida, and his daughters Alleda, Jannetie (Brewer), and Sarah.  Baptismal records indicate he had another son, Jan, who must have died young.  His sons Garret (1753-1834) and Isaac (1762-1844) stayed in the Conewago area, but younger Garret's widow (Eleanor Richond) and children later moved to Butler County, Ohio.  He had three sons and three daughters by wife Nelte Petersen: Jan (who may have died young), David, Isaac, Ante (who may have died young), Jannetie, and another Ante.  His son Jan was not mentioned in the will.  It appears that David (1765-?) and Isaac (1770-1839) stayed in the Conewago area.
Jan's son Johannis (1731-1772) died at the colony; his will, written April 9, 1771 and probated June 22, 1772, is on file at York.
Jan's last son, Isaac (1744-1772), was married to Hannah Peterson and he also died and left a will on file at York.  Isaac had three sons, John (1766-1841), Isaac (1768-1836), and Peter (1770-?) and it is known that the first two later moved to Cayuga County, NY in the 1790's.
