Paulus van der Beek was born in Breman, Germany as is recorded in his marriage record. (1)  He served as surgeon for the West India Company in Curacao on the company's ships and came to New Amsterdam in July 1644.   In September of that year he requested payment from the West Indian Company earned by him on the Island of Curacoa.  (2) About three months later he married the widow Mary Badie in Flatbush on 9 Oct 1644. (3)  Her 2nd husband, Willem Adriaensz Bennett had been killed by the Indians the previous year leaving her with two children from her 1st marriage and another four young children with her 2nd husband.  Her last child with William Bennett was baptized 9 Mar 1644 with Governor Kieft as witness and was thus only about 6 months old when she married Paulus van der Beeck.  (4)
In January of 1645 Catalyna Trico married to Joris Rapalje was visiting her daughter, Sarah, who was married to Hans Hansen.  Paulus van der Beeck was also there.  A court record says she asked him, "why do you beat my daughter?" They had a heated exchange of words with Paulus calling her a whore, etc.  She put up her hand and he struck her.  At first Paulus denied it, but when a witness came forward testifying to what he had heard, Paulus had no choice but to declare Catalyna Trico a "virtuous and good" woman and pay her a fine of 2 1/2 guilders. (5)  Three generations later Jan Van Arsdale, a great grandson of Paulus van der Beeck married Jannetje Dorland, a great, great granddaughter of Catalyna Trico.
When the first child of Paulus van der Beeck and Maria Badie was baptized on 10 Sep 1645 Paulus was listed as "chirurgyn." (6) In 1646 he acquired a patent for a lot in New Amsterdam which was confirmed in 1653. (7) The map above shows the location. (8) He was a delegate to a convention in 1653, resigned position of surgeon with the West Indian Co 1656, "collector or farmer of the revenues" in 1656,  reckoned "in easy circumstances and well off" taxed two florins in 1657. "farming out the excise and Tenths on Long Island" 1661-61, also ferrymaster, (3)  He hired an apprentice in 1654. (9) On 3 Feb 1662 he hired carpenters to build him a house at Gowanus, and Maria transferred her church membership to Brooklyn in September of the same year. (10)
Altogether they had six children baptized in New York and he was witness at at least eight other baptisms. (11) He died sometime previous to 1769 "for it is recorded that in that year Mary was once more a widow and as such conveyed lands." (3)
