Charlotte Wales

The inscription on her tombstone succinctly describes the key episodes of her
life, "Charlotte Wales Relict of Capt. Joseph Pettes. Born in Windham,
Connecticut Nov 24, 1761. Died Apr 21,1849" (1) Data from the Joseph
Pettes bible reinforces the fact that she was married to Joseph Pettes and
provides the date, April 18, 1782. (2) The death record from the Vermont
state Archives verifies the dates of her birth and death. (3) The name of
her father is very strongly suggested by two documents. One is a deed
registered in June 1781 where Seth Wales is selling land and where she is a
witness. It is the only known record where her name and Seth Wales are
shown together. (4) Probably of more importance to establishing who was
her father is the fact that Joseph Pettes, the husband of Charlotte Wales, was
the administrator of the estate of Seth Wales. The estate was recorded
December 2, 1786. This fact suggest very strongly that Seth Wales was her
father. (5)
As stated Charlotte Wales married in 1782 when she was 20 years
old. She had three children and lived in Amherst. Both her husband
and father were innkeepers. (6)
