Seth Wales

Seth Wales, son of Ebenezer Wales, was born in Windham, CT on 14 Apr 1733. (1) At the age of 19 he married Jemima Newcomb in Hebron, CT on 12 Mar 1754. (2) Their first five children were born in either Hebron, Ct or Windham, Ct. (3) But sometime after 1761 they may have moved to Norwich, New London, Ct. since a deed dated 22 Apr 1769 shows Seth and Jemima Wales of Norwich, New London, CT selling land they owned in Northampton, Hampshire, MA. (4) They had inherited this land from her mother, Abigail Newcomb. (5) After Norwich, Seth and Jemima next appeared in Grafton Co., NH where he got a grant of 3 miles of land on the Connecticut River between the towns of Stratford and Cockburne.  (6)  He seems to have flourished because by 5 Sep 1774 he was a Justice of the Peace in Grafton Co.  (7)
Seth appears to have had a limited involvement in the Revolutionary War as is seen in a 1775 chit from the National Archives showing him getting paid in New Hampshire apparently for transporting Indians. (8) On 11 Mar 1776 Seth and Jemima of Haverhill, NH sold land in NH to Timothy Bedel, the Lieutenant in the Revolutionary War that headed the regiment that Seth had been in. (9)
By 1780 he was living in Amherst, MA. In a deed dated 13 Dec 1780, Seth Wales of Amherst, MA was buying land in Leaverett. Hampshire, MA. (10)  Seth Wales and his son-in-law Joseph Pettes were both innkeepers in Amherst, MA. (11) Seth ran into some major trouble in Amhurst on 10 Mar 1783. He and two others were accused of stealing 12 oxen worth £200.  (12) And, Seth had to post bail of £50 with one of his sureties being his son-in-law Joseph Pettes. (13)  By May of 1783 fortunately 12 jurors found him not guilty.  (14)  Seth died in Leaverett, Hampshire, MA before 2 Dec 1786 which is the date his estate was probated.  Joseph Pettes, his son-in-law, was the administrator.
