Biography of John Whedon
by Susan Brooke
April 2020

John Whedon was born Sep 1, 1694, the 4th child of Thomas and Hannah Wheadon.  He had two older sisters and an older brother, Thomas, and three younger siblings when his father died in 1707.  John was 13 and his brother Thomas was 15, and they became the men of the family since their mother did not remarry until the brothers were in their 30's.  The youngest sibling, Martha, was born 3 months after her father's death.  From the estate records of his father, Thomas Wheadon, Jr., we learn that when the inventory of his estate was taken on Nov 1, 1707, his estate was valued at  £549 8s. (1) His mother, Hannah, was the administrator.  At the same time, the estate of his grandfather, Thomas Wheadon, Sr, was also being settled  and the amount due from his grandfather's estate was added to his father's estate.  With that and some adjustments by 1715 his father's estate had grown to £597.15.10. By this time, John Whedon was 21 years of age.

When Hannah, widow of Thomas Wheadon, Jr, as administrator filed a report in New Haven Probate Court on Jan 5, 1713/4 she was to receive 1/3 of her late husband's estate (2) and the rest was to be divided among her eight children with the oldest son getting his double share.  The next year, on Aug 1, 1715, there was another court appearance, (3) but this time the estate was to go to only seven children.  Her son Jonathan must have died.  Finally his father's estate was settled on Nov 6, 1715 and John Whedon received £49:18.9 worth of land. (4)

A year later John Whedon married Mary Crowfoot on Jan 10, 1716/17 in Branford.  They had four children together, the last, Elizabeth, being born on Jul 27, 1725.  Mary Crowfoot must have died shortly thereafter, possibly as a result of childbirth. At this time John Whedon was probably living in Saybrook which is about 22 miles from Branford.  In 1723 he was named as "of Saybrook" when selling the 1/4 acre of 5th Div. Land in "Scotch capwood" for £39 that he had inherited from his father's estate, to his brother, Thomas Whedon. It had only been valued at 7 shillings when he inherited it, but now it had "appurtenances." (5) On Dec 13, 1726 John Whedon is recorded as "of Branford" in Branford Deed BK 5 pg 10-11.  His siblings are signing off on any claim to their father's land in the 6th Division.  (See page for his father.)

John Whedon remarried to Dinah Seward on July 9, 1728.  She may have been a widow as no records have been found for her in Branford.  John Whedon and Dinah had a son, Jehoiada, on Aug 25, 1729.  "Jehoida Wheadon" fought in the French and Indian War and rose at least to Sergeant Major under Col. Nathan Whiting in 1762. (6)

Thirteen years after his marriage to Dinah Seward, John Whedon sold his dwelling house to his brother-in-law, John Plant who was married to John's older sister, Hannah.  He may have been having financial issues?  At any rate the sale went through on May 4, 1741. (7) Six years later Dinah repurchased that house from John Plant. (8) Had she just come into some money, say from her father?  She purchased the house on April 7, 1747 and a month later she and John Whedon sold the house to Stephen Foot. (9)

We know John Whedon was still living in Branford in 1751 when he paid £10 to Isaac Cook Jr for some land in the Seventh Division. (10)  A month later his son, Jonathan Whedon, paid Isaac Cook Jr £20 for some land in the 7th Division of Branford. (11)  "being ye remainder of the pieces of which I sold to John Whedon Senior, at Easterly End bounded by Sd. John Whedon land." On Jan 29, 1752 John Whedon sold some land for £7 to Nathan Palmer which "occurred to me by right of my Honorable Father Thomas Whedon late of Branford." (12)  A previous sale of 2 acres "from the estate of Thomas Whedon" to Josiah Harrison which took place in 1738/9 was recorded March 11, 1754. (13)   Then on Oct 9, 1756 John Wheadon gave his lands to his son-in-law, Israel Linsley who was married to his daughter Priscilla. (14)This is the last time John Whedon shows up in the land records of Branford, New Haven, CT.  Many Ancestry.com trees have him dying in Hebron, Washington, NY after 1783.

John Whedon does not seem to appear in either the tax or land records of Hebron, Washington, NY.  However, his nephew Daniel Wheadon, born May 6, 1726, son of John's brother Thomas Whedon, may have been one of the original settlers of Hebron.  Daniel Wheadon sold 3 acres of land with a "mantron house standing thereon" to John and Benjaman Plant on July 4, 1757. (15)  The three acres had come to him from the "Estate of my Honored Father Thomas Wheadon, Dec'd" and it was bounded by land of Nathan Wheadon..  He also mentions some swamp land "of my brother Thomas Wheadon.."  Daniel Wheadon may have gone to Easthaven, Connecticut about this time for he too, as did his uncle John Whedon, disappears from the land records of Branford after this time.  By the time of the American Revolution, Daniel Wheadon is possibly in Charlotte Co, NY (now part of Vermont) and then moved to Hebron. (16)  John Whedon's brother Nathaniel is also supposed to have died in Hebron in 1793. (17) He is found in Branford in 1768 selling land to his son Nathaniel Whedon, Jr. (18)
