From Genealogy of the Willis family written by his grandson,
Samuel Willis, of Jericho in the year 1760
"My grandfather, born as above said, lived in Wiltshire in a town called the
Devises and married one Mary Peace (born June 12th 1632}. They had several
children viz: Mary, Elizabeth, William and then moved up to London about the
year 1667, the year after the fire and had several children born in London, it
being not long after the rise of the people called Quakers.) where he suffered
many abuses from the rude rabble on account of his religion. After residing in
London seven or eight years, he removed over to this country in the province of
New York, with his family, all except his eldest daughter, whom he left in
England. On arriving in America, he went to Oyster Bay and settled there and
after living a year or two in that town he purchased a lot of ground of Captain
John Seaman, lying in the township of Hempstead, L I where my grandfather
settled with his family, having named the place Westbury. I suppose in
remembrance of a town of the same name in Wiltshire, perhaps the village from
which he came.
My grandfather had several children, viz: Mary, Elizabeth, William, Henry, John,
Sarah, Rachel and Esther. Some years after my grandfather came to this country,
his eldest daughter whom he left in England, came to this country to him, and
was subsequently married to George Masters, who with his wife settled in New
York."
