Jane Wilson

Some have assumed that Jane Wilson was the daughter of Benjamin Wilson &
Judah Docton. However Thomas Docton, father of Judah, only refers to two
grandsons in his will, with no mention of Jane. Jane Wilson married Solomon
Shepherd in 1733 at the New Garden Meeting. Judah Docton Wilson was still alive,
yet not a witness at the wedding.
There were several witnesses at the marriage, but the only person there with the last name of
Wilson was "Jesper Wilson" (1) This Jesper Wilson may be connected to Jane in
some way. (2) However, he never appears connected with her again in any Quaker
record. He was a witness to the marriage of Alexander Mode to Rebecca
Allen, daughter of John Allen of Londongrove on 18 4th month, 1741.
However, when Jane's brother-in-law, William Shepherd, married in the Menallen
Meeting, no one named Shepherd or Wilson was a witness. Jane was still at
New Garden. Her husband's will was probated in Lancaster County, PA in 1749.
Another interesting note is through John Blackburn. His daughter,
Margaret
Blackburn, married Jane's son Solomon Sherpherd. John Blackburn's sister,
Abigail Blackburn, married James Wilson, possibly son of Michael Wilson, and
James Wilson and Abigail Blackburn named one of their sons Jasper Wilson. James
and Abigail Wilson moved to Guilford NC about the same time as Jane Wilson
Shepherd. James Wilson signed a petition there about 1773 and Abigail is
listed in the 1790 census of Guilford, NC.
By 1751 Jane Wilson Shepherd had moved to Menallen Meeting. Among the witnesses at the
marriage of Samuel Pope to Elizabeth Stevenson were Jane (Shepherd) and her two
oldest children, John and Sarah. Williams Shepherd and his wife Richmundy
were also witnesses. Also worth noting are John and Michael Wilson. (3) They may
be relatives.
Jane and her daughter Elizabeth moved to the New Garden Meeting of Guilford, NC
in 1767. (4) Elizabeth Shepherd married Stephanus Haworth there on the 15 of 1st
month 1768. (5) Jane Shepherd was a witness as was William
Brasselton who had married Elizabeth's sister Sarah Shepherd in 1758.
There are no people named Wilson as witnesses.

In its early years Menallen meeting was distinctively an Irish meeting, the majority of its members being from Ireland. Among them were John Blackburn, judge of the York County court in 1764, county treasurer in 1759 and 1766, and member of the Assembly; etc.,---George Wilson, Solomon Sheppherd and Jacob Himshaw, from Grange, near Charlemont; Robert Mickle, from Dublin; etc.

Jesper
operated a mill and a tavern . Jesper, along with sons
John Sr. and James were vestrymen and wardens in the Huntingdon Church
of SPG (Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Lands
(London based). The Huntingdon Church (not to be confused with
Huntingdon County) is located in what is now York Springs, Adams County,
PA. Jesper's wife is Ann (LNU) WILSON. Jesper died in 1770.
Jesper, John Sr. and Jr. and James Wilson had been
Vestrymen and wardens in the Huntingdon Church, and may have signed the
petition to form the church in 1749.
Jesper Wilson died in
November 1770. He left money from his plantation and the place where he
lived to his wife, who he does not mention by name, and his daughter's
children. No trace of his property listed in his will can be found in
deeds or land records. His wife, Ann, left money to the heirs of John
Wilson, Jr., but none has been found for James Wilson or his heirs. Her
record of the gift to John Wilson, Jr's heirs is found in the land
records and not in a will.
