Robert Allyn1,2,3

M, b. circa 1616, d. before 20 September 1683
  • Robert Allyn was born circa 1616 at England.2
  • He married Sarah at Salem, Essex Co., Massachusetts, before 1642.
  • Robert Allyn died before 20 September 1683 at New London, New London Co., Connecticut.2
  • Surname is also spelled Allen.4
  • Robert Allen and wife Sarah are mentioned 10 m. 1642, Marblehead Vital Records v. 1, p. 9.5
  • Robert Allyn was at Salem, Massachusetts, where his brother William was an early settler, by 1637. They located in the section which soon became the town of Manchester. He was Constable there in 1648, and sworn a Freeman in 1649. His brother William remained in Manchester, and established a family there. Robert Allyn joined with others from Manchester and Gloucester who emigrated to Pequot (later New London, Conn.) in Mar 1651. He received a house lot on "Cape Ann Lane," in the rear of the town plot. In 1653 lots were laid out to Allyn and others in the northeastern part of New London in the "Pocketannock Grants," and he removed there in 1656. In May 1658, Robert Allyn and John Gager were released from their fine for not attending ordinary town training, probably because they lived at a large distance from the town center. In 1680, for a deposition on behalf of Edward Smith, he stated his age then to be about sixty-four. Robert Allyn was an original proprieter of Norwich, Connecticut, and was Constable there in 1669, although he returned to New London after only a few years. Allyn's Point, about a mile above Gale Ferry (headquarters of the Yale racing crews on the Thames River), and the height Allyn's mountain derive their names from him or his family. "Robert Allen" was dismissed from the First Church of Salem to Norwich, 12 Jan 1662/63. Deeds in 1664 and 1674 call him as of Norwich, but he was of New London when he conveyed land to his son John in 1681. Settlement of his estate showed that he died before 20 Sep 1683, carpenter's tools are mentioned in the inventory, and his widow survived him. His son John received property valued at 143 pounds, and four daughters received the balance of their portions.2
  • "Heirs to his estate were his son John, and four daughters - Sarah, wife of George Geares; Mary, wife of Thomas Parke; Hannah, wife of Thomas Rose; and Deborah, who afterwards married John Gager, Jr."3

Family: Sarah b. bt 1615 - 1625, d. a 5 Dec 1683
