  • Most probably the Walter Harris on the passenger list for the ship "Speedwell" sailing from Weymouth, England on 22 Apr 1637 with "his wife, six children and three servants." In Weymouth, Massachusetts he was granted land in the "west Field," eight acres in "Harrises Raing," and eight acres in the "mill furlonge." Walter was the appraiser of the estate of William Fry, his brother-in-law, in Dec 1643. He moved to Dorchester, Mass. by 1648 and was still there in Mar 1652/53. However, he had arrived in New London before 5 Dec 1653.

  • Walter came to Wethersfield, possibly as a widower. He married by 1686 Mary (Hale) Benjamin, widow of Caleb Benjamin. She was young enough to be the mother of his supposed son, Walter, who was called, "Jr. of Middletown," in 1711, although he may have been a son by a former unknown wife. Administration of this Walter's estate was granted to Mary Harris and George Stillman (a creditor) of Wethersfield, 7 Feb 1715/1716, with John Austin of Hartford bondsman. A list of debts shows an item owing to Walter Harris Jr.
    A Mary Harris, who married at Wethersfield, 11 May 1732, John Taylor, may have been another child of Walter and Mary Hollister, but then all of their children may belong to Robert Harris and Experience Chappel (Jacobus).

  • In March 1667 he became the owner of a right of land in Taunton by purchase from Richard Stacey. In 1678 he was a husbandman and an owner of land in the "South Purchase." He was one of the grantees named in the 1689 Bradford deed. He has been described as an "heir of William Harvey," and a s an "heir of his brother Jonathan Harvey, deceased," in deeds. In 1700 he was a member of the "Train-band" of Taunton. In 1708 and 1709 he was selectman of the town. In 1709 he was one of those who lead the opposition againt the division of Taunton. They lost their case and in 1711 the "North Purchase" was set off as the new town of Norton. He appears in deeds from 1714, and 1715 when he was 74 years of age. On 10 Feb 1716 he deeded land to his son William.3

  • Settled first at Dorchester, Massachusetts. He was one of the forty-six "first and ancient purchasers" of Taunton, Massachusetts in 1637. The land was purchased from Massasoit, chief sachem of the Wampanoag. William Harvey was the owner of eight shares in the original purchase.7
  • In 1647 William was one of the heirs named in the will of Agnes Clark of Ayshill (Ashill), Somerset, widow. The will was dated 20 Oct 1647 and proved 10 May 1648.8
  • In 1661 William Harvey was excise commisioner at Taunton.9
  • In 1664 William Harvey represented Tauton at the General Court. He held the same office in 1677.9
  • In 1665 He was chosen as one of the first "Celect Men" in Taunton. He served as selectman in 1666, 1667, 1671 and in other later years.9
  • On 10 January 1669 William Harvey was one of ten men chosen by the town "to draw (up) a list of purchasers or free inhabitants" in Taunton.9
  • On 2 September 1672 He was one of a committee of seven appointed to manage for the "free inhabitants" the purchase of a certain tract of land from Philip, alias Metacum, Chief Sachem.10
  • In 1675, hostilities with the Indians, in what would be known as "King Philip's War" broke out. Taunton was a constant point of attack. In the spring of 1676 the destruction of the village was imminent and the people of the Cape towns invited the people of Taunton to live with them until the war ended. The offer was declined in a letter "subscribed in the name of the town" by William Harvey and three other inhabitants.
    In March of 1677, Wiliam Harvey of Taunton received £10 from contributions made by "Christians in Ireland" for relief of those impoverished by the late Indian War.11
  • In January 1678 William Harvey was named as the first member of a committee of seven inhabitants of Taunton appointed to regulate the settlement of lands, and to attend to the confirmation of titles to purchasers and the ratification of supposed lost grants and town orders.12
  • In 1689 Maj. William Bradford having made some claim to all the territory within the limits of Taunton, the town paid him £20 for his alleged rights, and he gave a deed of release and confirmation to John Poole, William Harvey, Thomas Harvey, Sr., Thomas Harvey, Jr., and others, proprietors.12
  • His will was dated on 12 June 1691 "I Wiliam Harvey being growne to a considerable age through ye patience of God and now being sick and weake in body though of sound memory and judgement..."
    Son Thomas to have the house and land he lives upon up the River to the Highway and another parcel at the higher end of my land. Also three score acres of land lying by Three mile River Bridge. Also a lot of meadow at Scaddin's, about four acres. Also one half of my late fifty acre Division lying easterly from three mile River.

    To Nathaniel Thare, Junr., I give a parcell of land about or three acres lying at the Norwest from the meadow which we usually mow at three mile River.
    My rights and all future Divisions to be my two sons Thomas and Jonathan to be equally divided between.
    The remainder of my moveable estate to my son Jonathan whom I appoint sole executor of this my last will and testament.
