  • He married Mary Spencer.2
  • Named in his father's will and in the will of his brother John. He is evidently the Innkeeper referred to by Prof. Murdock and in the "Salisbury Genealogies" where it is stated that he was born in 1721 and died in 1779 of smallpox. Gravestones at Westbrook Cemetery, however, contridict these dates. There are two each pertaining to a Jonathan Lay, they read: "In memory of Mr. Jonathan Lay who died Feby 12, 1777 in the 69th year of his age," and "In memory of Jonathan Lay, who died Oct 7, 1793 in the 8th (or 80th, stone rather illegible) year of his age."2

He was a Deputy to the General Court in 1666 and 1678. He was a large land owner, and one of the patentees of Saybrook, owning land both near Essex Point and in the "Oyster River Quarter" (now Westbrook).4
