[S143] Roswell Parish, Parish Des, p.4 "It should be stated that the record of Samuel's marriage as given in the Ipswich Vital Records is "Martha Matafor and Samuel Parish at Chebacco, May 24, 1600." I am assuming that the wife Martha (often pronounced Marthy) was Marcy Madiver (or Madever) for the following reasons: 1- I have searched New England records in vain for another mention of the name Matafor. It sounds like Madiver. 2- In the Norwich Vital and Newent Church Records, Samuel's wife is Marcy or Mercy, his daughter being Mercy. 3- Savage gives: "Madiver, Joel, Casco, son of Michael, driven by Indian war, 1676 to Boston, there by wife Rebecca had Mercy, b. 12 Aug 1677; returned after the peace; and in the third war was killed by the French, Aug 1703." 4- "Mercy daughter of Joel and Rebecca Madever, b. Aug 12, 1677" - Boston Vital Records. 5- The family names Joel, Mercy and Rebecca of Samuel's children. 6- The line of flight and return of refugees from Falmouth during and after the three wars, which probably passed through Ipswich and nearby towns. The doubtless hospitable reception and more or less prolonged stay of these refugees at points along that line." Married May 24, 1669.
