[S1168] Personal knowledge of Paul Dudley, Pittsford, New York ,e-mail received Sep. 4, 2006 from Paul Dudley by Chris Chester, "My father received a call from the neighbor at the Keuka Lake cottage on Sunday reporting that our dock was floating due to the high water that resulted from the heavy rainfall. Jutta and I drove to Canandaigua today and met my parents for a ride down to take care of matters. On the way we drove past the house where my mother said Nellie taught school the year before she was married-- 1898/99. Unfortunately I didn't bring my camera, so no picture. But it is just off rt 5 & 20 and I drive right by it all the time on the way to and from Keuka. It is right across the street from the driveway to a Lowe's store. The address is 4335 Lake Shore Drive. A large addition has been added to the original square one-room school house and my mother said she thinks her mother had told her that it had been moved or at least placed on higher ground."

  • Father*: Nathan Smith b. c 1692, d. 16 May 1755
  • Mother*: Hester Green b. 19 Dec 1696
  • Sarah Smith was born in 1733.
  • She married Samuel Beman, son of Samuel Beman and Sarah Pinney, circa 1754.
  • Sarah Smith died on 19 December 1820 at Chazy, Clinton Co., New York.1
  • She was buried at Chazy, Clinton Co., New York.
  • A hundred years ago people wrote into a genealogy column of the day in the Boston Transcript asking if anyone knew who Sarah was--wife of Samuel Beman. Nobody did. Then someone went to the graveyard and found Sibbil Thompson--dau of Sebe and Anna Thompson buried near Samuel. The researcher married them. But Sibbil was married to Samuel Beman (son of Nathan Beman.) The DAR and lots of people picked it up and used it.
I have been unable to find physical evidence of a last name for Sarah. There is no marriage record for Sarah and Samuel that I know of. They were probably married in Dutchess Co.---a kind of no-man's land for searching records.
Several years ago a Beman relative from a lateral line, said Sarah was a Smith--daughter of Nathan Smith of Dutchess Co.. Also the name Smith was used for middle names in following generations: Nathan Sidney Smith Beman and Harry or Henry Smith Beman.
Samuel and Sarah named their first son Samuel for the father's father and their second son for the mother's father--Nathan.
Sarah died in Chazy. Her grave in Chazy appears to be unmarked. Samuel Beman died about six months later. According to an old obituary notice at the home of his daughter, Mary Beman-Haskins-Newcombe. He was buried in the Beman family plot in Riverside Cemetery in W. Plattsburg.

William Smith1

M, b. 27 November 1800, d. 1866
  • William Smith was born on 27 November 1800 at Shaffords Mill, Hertfordshire, England.1
  • He married Emma Kerl, daughter of William Kerl and Ann Clapham, at England on 10 August 1833.1
  • William Smith died in 1866 at Canandaigua, Ontario Co., New York.1
  • He was buried at Woodlawn Cemetery, Canandaigua, Ontario Co., New York.2
  • William Smith and Emma Kerl lived at Pre Mill House on the Ver, between Shaffords Mill and St. Albans. They attended St. Michael's (Episcopal) Church in St. Albans. William emigrated with his two eldest sons, Francis and Harry, in Apr 1842. They sailed from Liverpool to Philadelphia on the sailing packet "Thomas P. Cope," as steerage passangers. His wife, and the remaining children came over shortly afterwards, aboard the steamship, "British Queen," one of the first steamships to cross the Atlantic. The family settled in Toronto, Canada, where son Frederick was born and daughter Maria died of Scarlet Fever. In Toronto, William went into the soap and candle business, which required William to make frequent trips across Lake Ontario to Rochester to buy tallow. As the Toronto business failed, William decided a better approach might be to concentrate on making tallow candles and doing so right where the tallow was produced. After eight years in Toronto, the family moved to Bristol Center in Ontario Co., New York, and a couple of years later to Canandaigua, where William became a naturalized citizen.1
  • He appeared on the census in 1850 at Bristol, Ontario Co., New York, William, age 49 (an Ancestry.com transcription says 69), b. in England, a Chandler (candle maker), with wife Emma (37, Eng.) and children Edward (13, Eng), Helen (11, Eng.) and Frederick (2, Can.).3
  • He appeared on the census in 1860 at Canandaigua, Ontario Co., New York, William, age 59, b. in England, a farmer; wife Emma (47 Eng.); children Edward (23 Eng.) a carpenter, Ellen (21 Eng), Frederick (13 Can.), Louisa M. (9 NY), Eva M. (6 NY).4
  • Much of the information on William Smith, his ancestors and descendants comes from a manuscript written in 1907 by William's son Francis Smith, then of San Antonio, Texas. A copy is in the possession of Priscilla (Tyner) Beeman (2004).
