Daniel Stanton1

M, b. 1648, d. before 1688
  • He lived in Barbadoes, West Indies. After the death of Thomas Stanton, Sr., the sons decided to enlarge their business through a trading house, and arranged for Daniel to take up residence on Barbadoes, so as to dispose of their goods, furs and farm products in the West Indies in exchange for goods and groceries needed by the New England planters. Before leaving for the West Indies, Daniel sold a portion of his real estate in Stonington, in 1681, to his brother, Thomas, describing it in the deed as land willed to him by his father, Thomas Stanton, the interpreter general, which he failed to acknowledge before a magistrate, an omission that subsequently led to a good deal of trouble. An effort was made to correct it by an affidavit of two of the witnesses of the deed, on 9 Feb 1699, which did not prove satisfactory to the grantee of the deed. On 8 Oct 1715, Nicholas Cottrell made oath before a magistrate in Westerly, Rhode Island, stating that he saw Daniel Stanton, the grantor in the deed sign and seal the same, and that together with John Stanton, Samuel Stanton, and Mrs. Anna Stanton, signed as witnesses to the deed. An affidavit, 12 Oct 1715, of Robert Stanton before Nathaniel Chesebrough, Justice of the Peace, testified tohis brother Daniel's handwriting, affixed to the deed, and to the possession of the land held by his brother Thomas Stanton.2
