Simon Beaman1

M, b. circa 1626, d. 1675/76
  • Simon Beaman was born circa 1626 at England.
  • He married Alice Young, daughter of John Young and Alice, at Windsor, Connecticut, on 15 December 1654.2,3
  • Simon Beaman died in 1675/76 at Springfield, Massachusetts.4
  • Also known as Symon Beamon.5
  • Also known as Simon Beman.6,7,1,8,9
  • Simon's name appears as Beaman, Beman, etc. in various records and reports. Many of his descendants use the spelling, "Beman".
The earliest known record of Simon Beamon shows him to have been a resident of Springfield, Massachusetts, at least as early as 1648. The account books of William Pynchon show debits and credits to Simon from 1648 to 1675 and to his widow and sons after that date. On May 26, 1648, the bill of goods charged to Simon Beamon carries evidence that he was still a bachelor. A charge in 1653 suggests that he was about to take up, or to continue in the shoemaker's trade. Following this there are a number of entires in these books which show that Mr. Pynchon gave him credit for mending and making shoes, for going on "voyages to Pequot", "down the falls", etc.
Simon purchased a three-acre home lot, three acres of meadow and four acres of woodland. He received grants of a three acre home lot, three acres of wet meadow and fouteen acres of woodland in February, 1653, and sold all three pieces on October 4, 1654. Another grant, on May 12 1661-62, fourteen acres on December 8, 1664, eight acres adjoining the last tract and five or six acres of meadow on January 5, 1665, and various other small parcels.
He was appointed one of the fence viewers on February 13, 1670. He died between August 17, 1675, when the last charge was made against him on Pynchon's books, and September 26, 1676, when his widow filed an inventory of his estate totalling L84-15-06, including his shoemaker's tools and house and land at Shipmuck.
On the morning of October 5, 1675, the Indians burned down the town of Springfield, killing some of the inhabitants. It is possible that the Beamon home was one of those destroyed for, at a town meeting on February 3, 1679, "the Town being desirous to accommodate the poor widow Beamon with some land to set a house upon" appointed a commitee "to see where they may with most conveniency to her &: least inconveniency to the high ways & passages lay to her about a quarter of an acre to set a building upon." "Allice Beamon of Springfield, widow, was sick and died October 5, 1708."4

The Muster Roll was a census used to establish how many settlers had to be provided for. In addition to the information shown here the actual roll also indicates the following, numbers of males, females, children under 10, children over 10 and number of servants. Those marked with a * had their petition for provisions denied. In the preamble to the actual Muster Roll it is stated that there were some claims that were so unreasonable that the names were not inserted in the list. • He married Anna Safford at Preston, New London Co., Connecticut, on 12 November 1771.2
  • Also known as Uriah Beeman.
  • Uriah Beaman is claimed as a son of John Beeman Uriah Beeman was born out of wedlock to Silence Herrick who claimed that John Beeman was his father. However, Y-DNA testing of two direct male descendants of Uriah Beeman cast doubt on this claim. While the two match each other, they do not match the Y-DNA test results of five different descendant of Thomas Beeman (father of John Beeman). From this evidence, it appears that Uriah Beeman is not a natural son of John Beeman. A Y-DNA test of a direct descendant of John Beeman is needed to confirm this.3

  • He married an unknown person at Salem, Massachusetts, between 1629 and 1635.2
  • He married a wife (name unknown) at Salem, Massachusetts, circa 1640.1
  • John Beamon died before July 1647 at probably Salem, Massachusetts; when "John Beamont, son of John Beamont, deceased, being son-in-law of John Tucker, is placed in the care of Daniel Ray as an apprentice until he is 18 years old."3,1
  • Also known as John Beaumont.4,1,5,6
  • John Beamon, aged 23, came from Bridgenorth, Shropshire, England, to America in 1635 aboard the Elizabeth. He resided first at Salem, Massachusetts. On 30 March 1640, "John Beaumont," was granted five acres of planting ground to be laid out by the town of Salem.7
  • In 1640 John Beamon resided at Salem, Essex Co., Massachusetts.
  • A "John Beamont" appears in the Scituate section of Plymouth Colony in 1643 on the list of men able to bear arms, "but it is unlikely he is the same as the Salem man."1
  • The majority of John Beaumont's descendants spell the name as "Bement," pronounced, "Beemen." Came to New England in 1635, along with his brother William Beaumont on the "Elizabeth," aged 23 at the time. He first settled, with his brother at Salem, where he was granted five acres of land on 30 Mar 1640. His name appears on the Scituate list of men able to bear arms in Aug 1643. The following year he is in Boston, purchasing some books that had been a part of Elder William Brewster's library. 5. [S103] Josiah Granville Leach, Chronicles of the Bement Family in America (Philadelphia: Online version at www.bementfamily.com, 1928), States: "John Beaumont was born about 1612 in Yorkshire County, England, the third of six children of Thomas and Jennet (Stafford) Beaumont. Thomas was born about 1586, married Jennet Stafford in 1605, and died 9 Dec 1646 in England. It is believed, but not verified, that Thomas was the son of William and Rosamond Beaumont. It is not known if John's oldest brother, or his three sisters, ever came to America. John and his older brother, William (b. abt 1608) sailed from London on the ship, Elizabeth, on 15 Apr 1635, under William Stagg, Master, bound for New England with eighty or more souls. He settled first with his brother William at Salem, Essex, Massachusetts and was granted five acres of land there, 30 Mar 1640. In August 1643 his name appears on the list of men able to bear arms in Scituate, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts. The following year he was of Boston, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts purchasing there, 14 Jun 1644, of Jonathan Brewster, certain books which had formed part of Elder William Brewster's library. Shortly after this he died, leaving a widow and one son. The records of the Salem Quartely Court show that the widow married one John Tucker, and the son, John, had been placed under the guardianship of Daniel Rea of Salem, Massachusetts before July 1647. His only son, John, probably shortened the name to Bement and therefore originated it in America. Hereinafter cited as Bement Family Chronicles.

His father was of French descent. He married in 1643 at Boston, Lydia Danforth, a sister of Samuel Danforth. Soon after their marriage, William Beamont and his wife moved to Saybrook. They had five children: Mary b.1645, m. to John Tully, the Almanac Maker; Elizabeth b.1649 married to John Chapman, son of Robert; Abigail b.1654, m. Deacon Nathaniel Pratt, son of William; Samuel b.1656, m. Esther Buckingham, daughter of Rev. Thomas Buckingham; Rebecca b.1659, m. Major John Clarke. The speculation is that this Sarah is also a daughter of William Beaumont and Lydia Danforth).

  6. [S283] Mary Walton Ferris, compiler, Dawes-Gates Ancestral Lines (Milwaukee: Wisconsin Cuneo Press, 1931), Ferris, writing in 1931, offers some clues as to the place of origin in England for William and John Beaumont. It was found that the magistrates who took the oath of allegiance from William and John were located in Bridgeworth, Salop County, in the west of England. A "noted archeoligist" with extensive experience was asked to look further into the records of the parish and although he did not find the name of Beamon he offered the opinion that the name originated in the vicinity of Bowman's Hill, which is in the western part of Salop County, in the parish of Cardington and near Church Stretton. He was also of the opinion that the name was a contraction of "Bowman" and earlier of the Norman name "Beaumont", a spelling that was used by William later on. Their is a tradition, which has been published (see notes above) that William was a native of Carlisle, County Cumberland, on the border of Scotland. Ferris disputes this tradition for several reasons. First off, the name Beamon is not found in the parish records of the county, and secondly, it is certain that William was in Bridgenorth in 1635 when he took the oath, which is 170 miles (as the crow flies) from Carlisle. Ferris found that the name Beamon recorded in the counties of Stafford, Salop and York and believes that William may be from York, "the Beamon family of that county (York) intermarried with the Saltonstall family of which Sir Richard Saltonstall, of Old and New England, was a member, and Sir Richard's name was repeatedly associated in this country with that of William Beamon." Sir Richard was born in 1586 in Halifax, York County. His son, Richard Jr. of Ipswich, Massachusetts was born in 1610 in Woodsome, York County. Sir Richard was also, for a time, Justice of the Peace in West Ridding of York County. His maternal aunt, Elizabeth Ramsden married, in 1571, Edward Beamond of Whitely Beaumont, and had one son, Richard Beaumont, who was a first cousin of Sir Richard Saltonstall and was remembered in the will of Sir Richard's father. York could very well be a place of origin for William and John Beaumont.
