Ebenezer Beeman1,2

M, b. March 1719, d. 19 August 1784
  • Ebenezer Beeman was born in March 1719 at Preston, New London Co., Connecticut.3
  • He was baptized on 15 April 1719 at Preston, New London Co., Connecticut.4,5
  • He married Rachel Tracy, daughter of David Tracy and Sarah Parish, at Kent, Litchfield Co., Connecticut, on 25 February 1741/42 they were married by Hezekiah Parke, J.P.6,7
  • Ebenezer Beeman died on 19 August 1784 at Kent, Litchfield Co., Connecticut.8
  • Also known as Ebenezer Beaman.9
  • Ebenezer came to Kent, Connecticut as a child and remained there his entire life. Sons Reuben and Abel went on to New York's Genesee Valley, while son Elijah went to Vermont (Elijah's sons went on to Ohio and Michigan).
  • He was found on the tax list at Kent, Litchfield Co., Connecticut, in 1744 at 21-0-0.10
  • Ebenezer Beeman is recorded on the tax list in Kent, Connecticut on 18 Jan 1742/43 at 84£, in 1744 at 21£, in 1746 at 22£, in 1747 at 31£, in 1750 at 41£, in 1751 at 54£, in 1752 at 38£ 3s, in 1753 at 41£ 10s, in 1754 at 46£ 18s. On 3 Dec 1750, Ebenezer Beeman (with two others) was voted and made constable for Kent for the "year insuing." On 9 Dec 1751, Ebenezer Beeman (with three others) was voted and made constable for Kent for the insuing year. On 27 Sep 1750 the record from the East Greenwich Society meeting, for the purpose of building a meeting house for "the publick worship of God," choose Ebenezer Beeman, Jonathan Sackett, Nath. Swift, Josep Smalley, and Stephen Pain, "to measure acrost the midel of our society north & south." On 3 Apr 1751 at a meeting of the East Greenwich Society in Kent, Ebenezer Beeman was chosen, "to go to hors neak to discors with [Mr. Todd about calling as minister]." Ebenezer is also mentioned and called upon to carry out various tasks in the records of the East Greenwich Society in 1754, 1756, 1757, 1762, 1765, 1774, 1775, 1778. A record from the Warren (Connecticut) Church of Christ, recorded 18 May 1789 but dated 16 Sep 1759?, signed in Farmington by John Merriman, Eld. states that Ebenezer Beeman is "a member of ye Baptist Church and contributes to the necessary charges therein & Depine that he may not be imposed upon Else where but free according to Law." Ebenezer appears on the tax lists in Kent in 1759, 1760, 1761, 1762, 1763, 1764, 1765, 1766, 1767, 1768, 1769, and 1770. In a deed dated 19 Jul 1770, Ebenezer Beeman of Kent sold land in Kent to Abell Beeman of Kent.11
  • Ebenezer Beman joined the Dover First Baptist Church at Wingdale (Dutchess Co., New York) on 10 Jul 1762.12
  • The will of John Beeman, dated 21 Sep 1776, recorded in the Probate Court Journal, Litchfield District, Vol. 3, p.342, appoints his (John's) wife and brother, Ebenezer Beman (sic) as executors.13
  • An article by Carol A. Hanny found online, appears here in it entirety: "The Pinnacle, New Preston, Connecticut, is east of Lake Waramaug. This bald-topped, windswept mountain has puzzled me. Basically, there is a triangle of huge boulders pointing to true north, a semi-circle of stones and Hebrew inscriptions. I think, after much time spent there taking calculations, thinking it may be a solstice site, going up there in -30 wind chill, coming down the trail when it was so dark we couldn't see our hands in front of our faces, ducking behind the rocks attempting to stay out of the wind......that the components are not related. I think the triangle is a triangulation point for early mappers, probably from Yale. (I think it points to Mohawk Mountain, the next point to triangulate from.) I think the semicircle, with fire scars to back up my thesis, is from the indians, a place for a warning fire, like that placed on Mohawk Mountain when the Mohawks were raiding. The view southeast, south and southwest from there is amazing. All would see it. The inscriptions, all in Hebrew, are probably from some miners that walked up to the top of the hill for lunch and the breeze, and like all humans, left their marks. (There is a quartz mine you pass on the trail up there.) I would appreciate any information anyone has to offer on this site." She then updates the website in 2000 with the following: From "A History of Lake Waramaug" by Mary Harwood for the Lake Waramaug Association 1996, page 61: THE PINNACLE AND THE MYSTERY OF THE STONE CARVINGS -The summit of this mountain is crowned with granite, treeless and shrubless and covered with glacial scratchings. The rock has been vandalized for endless years with carvings of names, initials, and so forth. There are also four biblical names carved in Hebrew: Adam, Issac, Moses, and Abram. In 1789, Dr. Ezra Stiles, president of Yale College, was the first to make an official record of these carvings with drawings of each name. His report is still on file in the Beinecke Library at Yale. Stiles believed that the source of these carvings had been a group of Jewish miners, circa 1780, prospecting for minerals or potential mines in the Cornwall, Kent, and New Milford area. And the inscriptions were said to have been a memorial to their companions who had died in the course of the expedition. Archaeologists have explored this site on the Pinnacle for over two hundred years and written it up in books and articles. Well, the world is full of surprises. The explanation for the Hebrew carvings was recently found at the Gunn Historical Museum, Washington, Connecticut. It was tucked away in an early ledger for the general store in New Preston. No date was given, but judging from the early rag-paper on which it was written and also from the facts presented, it dates from the late 1700s to early 1800s. It was written by John Buckingham of Marble Dale. He spoke specifically of "the characters engraved on the Pinnacle rock that have been the subject of much wonder. Many learned men have examined them, but they remain a mystery . . .The truth has been given me by a grandson of the individual who engraved them . . .Ebenezer Beeman, an eccentric who made pretensions to great learning and had in his possession a Hebrew and Greek dictionary, went to the top of the rock in 1774, taking with him some books and tools. He attempted to engrave the names of Issac, Moses, Adam, and Abraham. The last name was unfinished on account of a heavy thunder shower . . . This, I am told, may be relied on as a true account of those Mysterious Characters.14
  • Ebenezer Beeman lived his entire adult life in the (then) newly created town of Kent, (then a part of Hartford Co., but soon to become Litchfield Co.), Connecticut. Like his father, Thomas, Ebenezer Beeman conducted numerous land transactions, both buying and selling, in Kent, Connecticut during his lifetime. Unlike his father, Ebenezer is found in records relating to The Church of Christ which was originally founded as the East Greenwich Society, and today is known as the Warren Congregational Church (Sackett Hill Rd., Warren, Connecticut).

They wanted two more men appointed to finish collecting the tax. (The East Greenwich Society became Warren Township in 1787).
Again in the Colonial Records of Connecticut, 1757-1762, p.578, October 1761, we find, "This assembly do establish Mr. Ebenezer Beeman to be Lt. of the 2nd Co. or trainband in the town of Kent." During the French and Indian War Ebenezer had been a Sergent in Capt. Dunham's Co. from Sharon and Kent and had been called out in August of 1757 to relieve Ft. Henry. (Conn. Hist. Soc. Vol. I) Ebenezer took the oath of allegiance at Kent 11 Dec 1777, but did not serve in the Revolution.
Militia officers (captain, lieutenant and ensign) conducted the four militia musters held annually. More important, they alone had responsibility for calling out the trainband in the event of an Indian attack or other emergency. The four Sergents in a militia company were elected by their men. Officers were similarly elected but confirmed and announced by the General Assembly. These were positions of honor and leadership.
There is some mix-up between Ebenezer Sr. and his son Ebenezer Jr. It is reported that Ebenezer Sr. died 1784 which appears to be true because Rachel Beeman is listed as a creditor at the Litchfield County Court in 1786. However, no estate settlement has been found. It appears that Ebenezer Jr., a bachelor on the 1800 census, died in 1802 and his two brothers, Abel and Lemuel, signed a bond in order to administer his estate, 25 June 1802. From the inventory taken on july 2nd it seems likely that Ebenezer Jr. was a carpenter from the large amount of tools in his possession.
Rachel Tracy Beeman, the wife of Ebenezer Sr., would have been a first cousin to Bethia Tracy Beeman, wife of Thomas Jr. Christopher and David Tracy were brothers and Lydia and Sarah Parish were sisters. Thomas, Daniel, Andrew, Park, John and Friend were given as names of children of Ebenezer and Rachel Beeman, but no record has been found of them by L.L. Beeman.

She is called a cousin, and is living with M.C. Thomson (b. Aug 1847 in New York, an express agent) and his wife, Julia (b. Jul 1850 in New York). The household lives at 503 Olive Street.11
  • Eunice Beeman remained single until she was into her mid-thirties. She then married a widower, thirty-six years her senior, sometime during the decade of the 1870s. They lived in Canandaigua where he died in 1882. Eunice was the executor of his estate when his will was proved in Sept. 1882. Eunice then reappears in 1900 in Texarkana, Bowie Co., Texas, living with M.S. and Julia Thomson, a couple described on the census record as her cousins. It has not yet been determined just who the Thomsons were, they may have been relations of her deceased husband, Levi Colvin. Eunice was a teacher, and presumably moved to Texarkana to teach. Eunice apparently never had children.

  • In 1963, Arch Merrill wrote a piece featured in the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle titled, "First, Last Reunion of Custer Men Was Held in Canandaigua in 1907." The article profiled Henry Clay Beeman, and mentioned his grandson Sherman Beeman, then of Shortsville, New York. From that article: Henry Clay Beeman of Canandaigua enlisted in the Union Army on 23 Jun 1863 when he was just 15 years old, the youngest enlisted man serving from Ontario County. He was enlisted in Company C, 15th New York Cavalry, served for three years, part of that time under General George A. Custer in Sheridan's army, participating in all the notable engagements in the Shenandoah Valley. He was honorably discharged on 23 Aug 1865. Although he never got to know the General during his service, Henry did get to shake his hand in 1866 when Custer came to Canandaigua with the party that accompanied Andrew Johnson on his "swing around the circle" campaign trip. In 1907 Henry, then Canandaigua's Chief of Police conceived the idea of holding a reunion of Custer's men in Canandaigua, of which 300 Civil War veterans and men of Custer's later commands attended. Custer's widow, the former Elizabeth Bacon also attended the event. It is said that Henry Clay insisted that all his five grandsons be named after Civil War generals.16,17

He returned to Canandaigua and for some years was engaged in special detective work, again becoming deputy sheriff from 1877 until 1884. He became manager of the Canandaigua Steam Boat Company in 1889, a position he held for six years. In 1896 he was appointed Chief of Police for the village of Canandaigua. He was politically affiliated with the Republican Party, was a member of the Canandaigua Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons, the K.O.T.M., and the Herendeen Post, Grand Army of the Republic of Shortsville.18
  • The obituary of Henry Clay Beeman: "CHIEF" BEEMAN DIES AT HIS HOME ON FRIDAY, AFTER A LONG ILLNESS, AGED 79 YEARS, "Henry Clay Beeman, a native of Canandaigua, and for twenty-seven years chief of its police force, died at his home in Bristol Street, Friday morning, in the eightieth year of his age. Mr. Beeman who retired from public service on January 1, 1923, had ben steadily losing strength for several years and at different periods had been a patient in the Memorial Hospital, but spent his last month in his home in the care of his daughter Miss Grace Beeman. Two sons, Roscoe C. Beeman of Rochester and Seth T. Beeman of Buffalo, also survive. The funeral service was held from the home on Sunday afternoon, with Rev. George E. Finlay officiating. The internment was in Woodlawn Cemetery. The bearers were six grandchildren of Mr. Beeman: Sherman Beeman of this city, Ellsworth and Miss Jessie Beeman of Buffalo, Winston, Warren and Miss Louise Beeman of Rochester. A detail of police formed the escort to the procession, and a detail from the American Legion fired volleys over the grave and blew taps at the finish of the service. Mr. Beeman had been a resident of Canandaigua all his life, having been born here on October 8, 1847. While he was yet a baby his parents moved to a farm on the east lake road. He attended Distric School No. 10 on the Geneva Turnpike until 1862 when he was 15 years of age. On June 23 of that year, young Henry determined to have a part in quelling the Rebellion, came into Canandaigua and applied for enlistment in the Union army then being enlisted. Questioned as to his age, Henry said he was 21. He was accepted and enrolled in Company C, 15th New York Cavalry, and went at once to Syracuse. From there he was sent to Staten Island, thence to Washington and finally to camp on the Potomac River. Almost at once his company was sent into active service, which continued until August 23, 1865, when he was mustered out at Louisville, Kentucky. Out of his many experiences in the war, which included service in the Luray, London and Shenandohah valleys and the Appomattox campaign, Mr. Beeman's most vivid recollection was of his service under General Custer in his western campaigns. He recalled that he saw General Custer nearly every day for almost a year. Returning to Canandaigua in the fall of 1865, Mr. Beeman found employment as a driver of the Canandaigua-Rushville stage. After a year of this work he got a job in the blacksmith shop of Henry Van Tyne in Bemis Street. He continued at this for two years when he was seized with the "wanderlust" and spent the next year tramping about the country, working in one place until he had earned sufficient funds to carry him to another. On his return to Canandaigua in 1869 Mr. Beeman was appointed by I.B. Smith, John C. Draper and Henry Pierce, then acting as merchant's protective committee, as village night watchman. After a year of this he went to New York to take a position with the Pinkerton Detective Agency, being sent out from New York to investigate many crimes. One trip of this kind carried him to the Black Hills in North Dakota on the trail of some Cornell University students who had run away. Mr. Beeman ws with the Pinkerton Agency for seven years. He returned to Canandaigua in 1877, having been appointed by Sheriff David Benham as turnkey at the jail. He held this position through the terms of Sheriff Benham, Sheriffs O.S. Bacon and Hiram Peck, a total of nine years. In 1886 Mr. Beeman located on his farm in Hopewell, leaving again in 1890 to become general manager for the Canandaigua Lake Navigation company. During his connection with this company, he served part of a term as village trustee from the Third Ward and as excise commissioner. In 1896 Mr. Beeman was appointed chief of the Canandaigua village police department by Rolland Beecher, O.S. Bacon and Frank McNulty, then serving as police commissioners. He continued in this capacity until 1913 when Canandaigua was elevated to a city, when he was appointed chief of the city police. He was granted a leave of absence January 1, 1923, on half-pay and retired on a pension."19

  • He appeared on the census in 1800 at Fairfax, Franklin Co., Vermont, with a household of 1 male under 10, 1 male 26-44, 1 female 26-44.8
  • Jedediah Durkee Beeman took on a farm next east from his father's at North Fairfax. He lived and died on this farm. He was a tall spare muscular man, while Mary Osgood was a small slight woman weighing about 90 pounds, and could stand under her husband's outstretched arm. He was a man of energy and push, qualities which he transmitted generously to his descendants.
Called "son of Joseph, who was son of Joseph," by Aldrich. Fought in the War of 1812, was a Captain of two companies to defend the lines between the United States and Canada. Aldrich names his six children by Polly Osgood as Lucy, Polly (who would be Mary), Nancy, Clara, Munroe and Hubbard. He says that his second wife was Rhoda Stratton, daughter of Sheldon and Hannah Stratton of Fairfax, Vermnot. Other sources say his second wife was Rhoda Chapman (birth and parents not named). Although Aldrich is a source contemporary to the time in which Jedediah Beeman lived, it appears that he confuses this Jedediah with the Jedediah, born in 1835, son of , Jeremiah Hubbard, grandson of this Jedediah. Jeremiah Hubbard Beeman was married to Rhoda Stratton.1
