Olive Beeman1

F, b. between 1730 and 1740, d. 17 June 1792
  • Olive Beeman was probably born between 1730 and 1740.
  • She married Elijah Owen, son of Joshua Owen and Margaret Woodworth, at Salisbury, Litchfield Co., Connecticut, on 10 November 1756.2
  • Olive Beeman died on 17 June 1792 at Milton, Chittenden Co., Vermont.3
  • A large number of online genealogies, available at World Connect, record this Olive Beeman's parents as Samuel Beeman (Beman) and Margaret Chapman, none of which cited any original sources. This claim cannot be correct. Olive was born in 1735 in Salisbury, Litchfield, Connecticut. Margaret Chapman was born in 1673 and this would have put her at age 62 years when Olive was born (it is impossible for Margaret Chapman to be Olive's mother). The family of Samuel Beeman and Margaret Chapman seems to have lived out their lives in the Windsor and Simsbury areas of Hartford County, Connecticut. A couple of online sources have suggested Friend Beeman as the father of Olive (this is also impossible, see "The Family of Elijah Owen, Sr. of Milton VT," TAG 60 (1984):161).
Olive Beeman's parents have not been discovered.

Phebe Beeman1,2

F, b. 23 June 1760
  • Phebe Beeman was born on 23 June 1760 at Kent, Litchfield Co., Connecticut.3
  • She married first at Bennington, Vermont, Samuel Millington, son of Solomon Millington.1,2
  • Phebe Beeman married second Roger Kinsley.2
  • Phebe Beeman married third Hoadley.2
  • Phebe Beeman married fourth Stephen W. Eldridge.2
  • Phebe Beeman died at Fairfax, Franklin Co., Vermont.2
  • She was buried at North Fairfax, Franklin Co., Vermont.4
  • "The first child of Joseph and Catherine Beeman was a daughter named Phebe. The first I knew of her she was in Bennington living as a hired maid in the family of Solomon Millington just before the Revolutionary War, and she was married to one of the sons, named Samuel Millington. He shortly afterwards enlisted in the continental service, was sent with an army south and never heard of after. He is believed to have been killed in battle as his clothes were found on the field of battle after the dead were buried. In 1777 she had a son born and called him Samuel after his father. He was the only child of her own she ever had although she had four husbands during her lifetime. Old Mr. Millington after his son's death settled off with her and gave to her and her child Sam'l an equitable portion of property. She and her son went and made their home at her father's and Sam'l came up with them as one of the family. A few years after they came to Fairfax, Vermont, Aunt Phebe married Mr. Roger Kinsley, a widower with one child, a little girl named Rhoda. He built the house and they lived in it next East of the school house where Sam'l Brown recently lived. While they lived there an Indian girl who alone wondered about here was taken sick with the fever and Mr. K. took her into his house and they charitably took care of her till she died and was buried. She was the first person buried at what is now the North Fairfax burying ground. Soon after Mr. K. was taken sick with the same disease and in a few days he died and was buried in the same yard, being the first white person buried in the burying ground. Aunt Phebe after married Mr. Hoadley who died about 1817. They lived on and owned the farm near the four corners in the north part of Georgia, Vermont, afterwards called Millington Farm. After Mr. Hoadley's death Sam'l Millington and his family moved from Shoreham where they had been living for some time on to the place and his mother lived with him till she married in her advanced age a Mr. ? of Georgia, a widower with a family. After living together for a few years they agreed to seperate, she went back and lived with Sam'l until her death. She was a remarkable woman, very smart, judicious, a good calculator, thorough in what she undertook. Her remains rest with her parents, brothers and sisters in the same burying ground at North Fairfax." From, "Joseph Beeman and Catherine Durkee", by Aaron S. Beeman, 1872.2

Rufus Beeman1

M, b. 7 August 1779, d. 11 October 1863
  • Rufus Beeman was born on 7 August 1779 at Kent, Litchfield Co., Connecticut.2,3
  • He married first at Kent, Litchfield Co., Connecticut, on 8 August 1799 Polly Hungerford, daughter of Peter Hungerford, Married by Rev. Jeremiah Day of New Preston.4,5,6
  • Rufus Beeman married second at Lafayette, McKean Co., Pennsylvania, after 1822 Abigail R.7
  • Rufus Beeman married third at McKean Co., Pennsylvania, before 1850 Mary Bainbridge.8
  • Rufus Beeman died on 11 October 1863 at Lafayette, McKean Co., Pennsylvania.
  • Rufus Beeman resided in Kent and New Milford, Connecticut where his children were born, moving in about 1840 to McKean County, Pennsylvania. He was born 7 Aug 1779 (Kent Vital Records) and died 11 Feb 1863 at the home of his son, Albert Beeman, in Lafayette, McKean, Pennsylvania. Rufus married first Polly Hungerford, daughter of Peter Hungerford of New Preston, Connecticut, 8 Aug 1799 by the Rev. Jeremiah Day of New Preston. It is not known for sure if Polly is the mother of all his children as he is married, second, to Abigail R. who is buried by him at the Lafayette Cemetery. Her tombstone reads, "Abigail R. Beeman, wife of Rufus, died Oct 22, 1844, age 62 years old. "Rufus Beeman died Oct 11, 1863 age 83 years 6 months." This one large tombstone also includes the dates of death for Antha Root and Albert Beeman.
From the census it appears that Rufus Beeman married, third, the widow Mary Anderson, as they are living toether on the 1850 census with her son, Abraham Anderson. In 1860 they are living in seperate households, Rufus with Aaron Hagadorn (no relation?) and Mary with her son James Anderson. "Mary Anderson, who died at Anderson Station on the Kinzua in Dec 1889 was in her one hundred and third year. She settled there in 1836 and five years later her husband was frozen to death near Marshburg." (The History of the Counties of McKean, Elk, Cameron and Potter, Penn., J.H. Beers & Co., Chicago, 1890).
Rufus Beeman made an application for Bounty Land for his service in the War of 1812 on 2 Dec 1815 in New Milford, Connecticut. With this application he included his original discharge paper which reads, "By the order of Brigadier General Thomas H. Cushing Commanadant of Military District No.2, To All Whom It May Concern, Know ye that Rufus Beeman a Sergent of Captain E. Warner's company 37th regt. of Infantry who was enlisted the 21st day of March 1814 to serve during the war, is hereby honorably discharged from the Army of the United States, having faithfully served out the full period of his enlistment. Said Rufus Beeman was born in the Town of Warren in the State of Connecticut is about thirty four years of age, six feet high, dark complexion, dark eyes, light hair and by occupation, when enlisted, a carpenter. Given at New London the headquarters of the district this 10th day of May 1815. J.L. Eastman."
"Pursuant to the second section of an Act of Congress, passed the 6th of May, 1812, authorising the Secretary of War to issue Land Warrants to the noncommissioned Officers and Soldiers enlisted in the service of the United States, conformably to the acts of the 24th of December, 1811 and of the 11th of January,1812, Rufus Beeman, late a Sergent in the company commanded by Capt. E. Warner of the 37th Regiment United States Infantry is entitled to one hundred and sixty acres of land, to be located agreeably to the said act on any unlocated parts of the six millions of acres appropriated by law for the original grantees of such military warrants; and this warrant is not assignable or transferable in any manner whatever. Given at the War Office of the United States, this 25th day of January A.D. 1816. Wm. A. Crawford, Secretary of War" Warrant No. 2068.
The records of the former General Land Office contain a file showing that Warrant no. 2068 for 160 acres was used by Rufus Beeman for a Military Bounty Land Patent in 1822 to the NE1/4 Sec. 31-3S-2W in Arkansas County, Arkansas, 3 miles S. and 1 mile W. of Crockett's Bluff. Apparently the land was not "located agreeably" to the Rufus Beeman family as they never moved to Arkansas. You could not sell as bounty land warrant until an act was passed in 1852 making them assignable. The recorder of Arkansas Co., at DeWitt writes, "We are unable to find record of deed from Mr. Beeman conveying above lands. It is quite probable that he abandoned the lands and they were sold for taxes to F.K. Lyman in the year 1868 in the name of "unknown owner".1

Samuel Drinkwater Beeman1,2,3,4

M, b. 3 June 1760
  • Samuel Drinkwater Beeman was born on 3 June 1760 at Kent, Litchfield Co., Connecticut.5,6
  • He married Beulah Porter, daughter of Thomas Porter and Beulah Miner, at Washington, Litchfield Co., Connecticut, on 5 February 1786.7,8
  • Samuel Drinkwater Beeman would have been about 16 years old at the time of the start of the American Revolutionary War. It is possible that he served in the war but that is a fact that still must be confirmed. "Connecticut Revolutionary Pensioners" does list a Samuel Beeman who served in both Connecticut and in the Continental Army and who as a survivor collected a pension in 1818 in Ohio. Gwen Boyer-Bjorkman records the following for Samuel D. Beeman, "Enlisted in the Connecticut Militia May 26, 1777. Served in the 7th Connecticut Regiment (foot soldiers) under Col. Albert Chapman, Col. Heman Swift, Lt. Col. Hezekiah Holdridge. Discharged May 26, 1780. In addition, many of the first settlers of Cayuga Co., New York were Revolutionary War veterans who received land in that area for their service.9
  • From "The Will of John Beeman of Kent, Litchfield County, Connecticut" dated 21 Sep 1776, recorded 11 Dec 1776: "I give to my son Samuel all my farming tools cart plow chanes axes hoes horse tackling agers chisels pistel crobar and my will is that my debts be paid out of my moveables that are not disposed of and if there is aney over to be divided between my last wives children equaley and if the moveables shold fall short of paying the debts then my will is that peace of Land that lyeth between Nathan Eliots Land being about two acres to be sold to pay ye debts."10
  • In the 1790 Census (First Federal Census of the United States) Bulah Beeman is recorded in Harpersfield, Montgomery County, New York, p.108. The entry records the family consisting of 1 male above the age of 16, one male below the age of 16 and one female. Harpersfield was formed March 7, 1788, with the town of Franklin taken off in 1792, Kortright in 1793 and part of Stamford in 1834. The town was named in the honor of Col. John Harper, a proprietor and pioneer settler. The Harper brothers were ardent Patriots of the Revolution and active defenders of liberty. Apparently, during the years of the Revolution, Harpersfield was an area that was subjected to violent raids by Tories and their Indian allies.
  • From Kenneth Beaman's, Descendents of Daniel Beeman: "Samuel and Beulah removed shortly after they were married to Harpersfield (now Delaware County) New York. There they resided near Benlack Porter, a possible relative of Beulah Porter's in the 1790 census. In the 1800 census, Samuel D. Beeman's family was in Genoa, Cayuga, New York, along with Samuel's brother Andrew. (Andrew Beeman b. 8 Jun 1769; d. Dec 1861) - Nancy Burr Smith letter, quoted by Vera Beaman of Skaneateles, New York."
  • The First Presbyterian Church in Genoa, New York does not have any records of births or baptisms of any children of Samuel Beeman (or any other Beemans) for the years 1799-1853.
  • Samuel Drinkwater Beeman appeared on the census in 1800 at Milton, Cayuga Co., New York, Samuel as head of household, 3 males under 10,1 m10-15, 0 m16-25,1 m26-44, 0 m45+, 2 females under 10, 1 f10-15, 0 f16-25, 1f26-44. The male age 10-15 would be his son Samuel Porter, so there are six other children not yet identified.11
  • The 1820 Federal census records a "Samuel Bemer" in Genoa (which was formerly Milton), Cayuga Co., New York. The family consists of 3 males 16-26, 2 males over 45 (including head of household), 1 female under 16, 2 females 16-26, 1 female 26-45, 1 female over 45, and includes 1 "foreigner who is not naturalized". Three members of the household are "engaged in commerse." It appears that one of Samuel's grown children, and his family is living with Samuel. Samuel and Beulah are probably both alive in 1820, they would be about 60 years old.12,13
  • Cayuga County, New York was part of Montgomery Co., 1784; part of Herkimer Co., 1791; part of Onandaga Co., 1794; it was set off as a seperate county in 1799. Senaca County was taken off in 1804 and part of Tompkins County in 1817. The town of Milton, Cayuga County (ca.1800) is now both Genoa, Cayuga County and Lansing, Tompkins County.
Genoa was orginized as Milton by the Court of General Sessions, 27 Jan 1789 and it's named changed from Milton to Genoa 6 Apr 1808. It originally embraced the towns of Locke, Summer Hill and Groton in Tompkins County which were set off as Locke 20 Feb 1802, and Lansing in Tompkins County which set off on the erection of that county 7 Apr 1817.14
  • No record of a will was found for Samuel D. Beeman in the Cayuga County Surrogate's Court. Some possible Cayuga County research sites are: Seymour Library, Mary VanSickle History Room, 176 Genesee St., Auburn, NY 315-252-2571, open M,T,W,F 2-5pm, M,W 6-9pm. Samuel Porter Beeman1,2,3,4,5,6

M, b. February 1787, d. 1 August 1876
  • Samuel Porter Beeman was born in February 1787 at Kent, Litchfield Co., Connecticut.7
  • He married first at Cayuga Co., New York, before 1807 Permelia Murdock, daughter of Joshua Murdock and Eunice Moore.8,9
  • Samuel Porter Beeman married second at Clarence, Erie Co., New York, on 1 October 1846 Mary Rogers.10
  • Samuel Porter Beeman died on 1 August 1876 at Clarence, Erie Co., New York.11,12
  • He was buried at Beeman Cemetery, Clarence, Erie Co., New York.13,14
  • Surname is also spelled Beman; (1850 census).15
  • He appeared on the census in 1830 at Erie, Erie Co., New York, as Samuel Beman (or Beeman) with a household of 2 males 10-15, 2 males 15-20, 1 male 40-50, 1 female 5-10, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 40-50.16
  • He appeared on the census in 1840 at Clarence, Erie Co., New York, as Samuel Beman, with a household of 2 males age 20-30, 1 male 50-60, 1 female 15-20, and 1 female 50-60.17
  • He appeared on the census on 5 September 1850 at Clarence, Erie Co., New York, as Samul Beman, age 63, birth place recorded as "unknown." A farmer, with real estate valued at $6000. In the household are his wife Mary, son Salmon Beman, Helen Hetinger, age 19, and Elias Wyckoff, age 18.15
  • The "Beeman Cemetery" is on Salt Road in Clarence, Erie County, New York, about a quater mile north of Clarence Center Road. Salt Road runs north to south between Rt 5 (Main St.) and Tonawanda Creek Road. Among those buried with Samuel and Permelia are two infants, there are no names or dates on the gravemarkers.

From "History of Buffalo & Erie County 1620-1884" p.383:
Colonel Samuel Beaman, then twenty-one years old, came to town in 1809. Accompanied by his bride, he carrried his household furniture on his back from Clarence Hollow to a point three miles north, where he erected his cabin in the woods and began to clear the farm on which he lived about seventy years. He was a carpenter and commanded a dollar a day for his services. Many of the old framed dwellings and barns now seen in Clarence were erected by him.

Samuel P. Beeman came to Clarence in 1809 and purchased land on Salt Road (first farm north of Beeman Cemetery on same side of road) then returned for his bride. They bought all their household goods by horseback according to family story. There was an excellent grove of pines on the farm and he soon had a sawmill in operation. Many of North Clarence farm houses were built of lumber from the Beeman mill. After living in a log cabin for some time, they improved the farm by building a brick house. It was almost gutted by fire at one time but was restored and is now (in 1963) the home of Dr. Howard Martin, a Veterinarian. It was later owned, in 1983, by Alfred Davis, a builder.(Clarence Historical Society Genealogy Dept.)

When Col. Samuel Beeman settled on his farm there was not a house to the north, through to the vicinity of Lockport. Bears and wolves were very numerous in this section as well as an occasional panther. Sometime later Col. Beeman built a sawmill on the creek which bears his name. This site became known as "Little Gully" and is frewuently referred to as such in later surveys. (Baker 1983) There is a picture of "Little Gully" on page 32 of Baker's "History of the Town of Clarence".

Samuel Beeman may have received his title of "Colonel", as he is often referred to, during the War of 1812. He would have been about 25 years old during the war and was in very close proximity to actual fighting. The British burned the city of Buffalo during the war. From Baker 1983, p.39: A Clarence regiment had already been formed with a Buffalo unit under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Chapman. Eventually the Buffalonians were formed into a seperate company so the Clarence group became part of Warren's regiment when the militia was summoned. This group saw a great deal of death and bloodshed. During the war the whole adult male population of the town of Clarence was at one time or another "on the lines". It should be noted though that I have yet to find an account of any military service for Samuel (that doesn't mean it does not exist).

There are four seperate land transactions recorded for Samuel Beeman (Beman) in "Western New York Land Transactions 1804-1824". The first three involve the same property lots. They are dated 10 Apr 1809, 21 Jan 1811, 16 Dec 1816 and are for lots 6, 8 (section 3, township 12, range 6). The fourth is dated 3 Mar 1824 and is for lot 4 (section 3, township 12, range 6). The complete records are with the Archives of the Holland Land Company, which is microfilmed. Ref-page numbers are: 488-0061; 488-0021; 494-0039; 502-0014.

In 1850 Samuel is found living in Clarence, Erie Co., New York, age 69, a farmer. The census record states that his birth place is "unknown". The household consists of his (second) wife Mary, age 66, son Solomon, age 37, Helen Hetinger, age 14 and Elias Wycoff, age 18, a hired laborer. Helen could possibly be a child of Mary's from a first marriage, although if she is, Mary would have been 51 or 52 years old at the time of her birth, so that may not be likely.

About 1000 feet west of the West Lake Road - on the north side of a former east-west road which connected West Lake Road and Middle Cheshire Road and which has now been abandoned - is a cemetary no longer in use. Burials were made from 1831 to 1883, including names such as Beemen, Wolverton, Dempsey, Gates and Burch. The first mention of a burying ground at this site is contained in a deed in 1822 by Parshall to Parshall recorded in Liber 40 of Deeds at page 270. The Grantor had obtained his title from the State of Connecticut in 1812 by deed recorded in Liber 18 of Deeds at page 14. This particular cemetary was a portion of a 6-acre parcel, which parcel abutted on the north side of "the highway running westerly from Red Dock Point," and the burying ground not being defined in size except as located in a deed by Gates to Chamberlain, recorded March 1, 1886, in Liber 181 of Deeds at page 208: "Excepting and reserving therefrom the burying ground on said farm as now owned." Since the former highway was abandoned, there does not appear of record any right of way for access to this burying ground from any public highway, excepting those private lands. "That old road was north of a gully that is still very evident from Wyffles Rd. Mr. Wyffles (10/20/1993) hiked up there and took some pictures. The cemetery is very overgrown and some stones are in disrepair. Page notes transcription was done in 1970..
