John Brownson1

M, b. 21 September 1602, d. before 28 November 1680
  • John Brownson was baptized on 21 September 1602 at Lamarsh, Essex, England.2
  • He married Frances Hills at Halstead, Essex, England, on 19 November 1626.1
  • Died shortly before before 28 November 1680 at Farmington, Connecticut.
  • In New England his surname was spelled variously as Brownson, Bronson and Brunson. He was a Puritan, and strongly influenced by the many Puritan preachers in Essex, and, together with his wife and two small daughters, and with his younger brother Richard and younger sister Mary, he joined the migration to New England. They probably sailed in 1635 on the Defence. They most likely moved and settled immediately in the new settlement of Hartford on the Connecticut River, with the first settlers led by Thomas Hooker, who himself, had preached and taught for some years at Little Baddow in Co. Essex, and was no doubt known to John Brownson in England. There is no record of the family in Massachusetts Bay. John enlisted under the name of "Brunson" (the usual spelling in the Hartford records) for service in the Pequot War in 1637. He had several parcels of land assigned to him by the division of Feb 1639/1640. At some unknown time he removed from Hartford to Farmington, which was founded about 1641 by men from Hartford. He was on the Grand Jury there in Mar 1649/50, and was Deputy to the General Court four times, May 1651, Oct 1655, May 1656 and Oct 1656. He was Constable of Farmington for a year begining 4 Mar 1651/52. He was one of the "seven pillars" of the church at Farmington from its founding, 13 Oct 1652. He was on the list of Freemen of Farmington in 1659, and served on the petit jury 7 Mar 1660/61. He was freed from "traineing, watch and ward," no doubt because of his age, on 4 Dec 1662. On 16 May 1670, Cherry and Will, the Indians, and three of the Milford Indians, were adjudged to pay John Brunson 20s. for the "sider" they had stole from him. The inventory of his estate was taken 28 Nov 1680, the property divided by the court among his surviving children. A late application for distribution was made 5 Mar 1727/28 by George Kilbourn, Thomas Hopkins and others as heirs by marriage and descent from John Brunson.

  • Mary Brownson was possibly born in March 1622/23 at Earl's Colne, Essex, England.
  • She married Nicholas Desborough, son of Nicholas Disborough and Mary Gilbye, at Hartford, Connecticut, before 2 April 1640.1
  • Mary Brownson died before 1670 at probably Hartford, Connecticut.
  • Her baptism is not recorded at Earl's Colne. Perhaps she was born just before her mother's death. Coddington (1962) relates the following story of Mary Brownson: "Mary Brownson was a baby when her mother died; she was raised by a stepmother who was, possibly, unsympathetic, and this may well explain much that happened in Mary's youthful career. Mary was a seventeenth century teenager when she accompanied her older brothers, John and Richard Brownson, to Hartford, and there she became almost, but not quite, a juvenile delinquent. Probably her brothers and sister-in-laws were unable to control her. Four boys, John Olmstead, Jonathan Rudd, John Pierce, and Nicholas Olmstead, got into grave trouble for what must have been a strenuous petting with Mary, but there is no mention of fornication in the court records, as there certainly would have been in so strait-laced a community as Hartford if the town authorities suspected it had occurred. Instead the phrases used by the court were "wanton dalliances, lacivious caridge and fowle mysdemenors at sundry times with Mary Brunson." Mary and the first three boys were merely "corrected," but Nicholas Olmstead was given a stiff fine and ordered "to stand vppon the Pyllery at Hartford." All this seems to have happened in the winter of 1639/40 and the early spring of 1640 (Records of the Particular Court of Connecticut, 1639-1663, Coll. Conn. Hist. Soc. 22:10, 12). Mary Brownson was hastily married off to a safe, substanial, and somewhat older man, Nicholas Desborough."
