Solomon Caswell1

M, b. 5 December 1763, d. 16 February 1845
  • Father*: Nathan Caswell
  • Mother*: Hannah Shaw
  • Solomon Caswell was born on 5 December 1763 at Norwich, New London Co., Connecticut.
  • He perhaps married Ann Owen circa 1787.2,3
  • Solomon Caswell married Hannah before 1813.1
  • Solomon Caswell died on 16 February 1845 at Milton, Chittenden Co., Vermont.
  • He was buried at Milton Plains Cemetery, Milton, Chittenden Co., Vermont.
  • Called, "Sol," he served in the militia during 1781 in Tinmouth, and later moved to Milton, probably about 1784/1785. The first settlers had come to Milton about 1782, and Solomon was certainly there by 1788, when he joined in a petition to the legislature of the State of Vermont voicing a concern over the amount of a road building tax that had been passed, and suggesting that any overage be used to build a bridge over the Lamoille river. He was chosen grand juror, surveyor of highways, hog reeve, and fence viewer at town meetings between 1789 and 1809. He was a farmer in Milton, his ear-mark for cattle, sheep and swine was "Two Happines the upper Sid of the Right Eair," and was registered in Milton 28 Jun 1791. It has been said that he was married three times although evidence suggests that he was only married twice. Solomon signed the freeman's oath in Milton, apparently in 1792, being number 18 on a list of 200 residents. He was an active trader of land in Milton, while continuously residing on the same farm. A Revolutionary War marker and American flag mark his grave in Milton Plains Cemetery. He served from the town of Tinmouth in Capt. Orange Train's Company, Col. Lee's Regiment of militia from 20 Oct 1781 to 5 Nov 1781.

In 1793 Elijah Owen deeded land to "my son Solomon Caswell of Milton" (Milton LR 1:205). In the Plains Cemetery are gravestones for "Anna Caswell, wife of Solomon Caswell, who died 9 June 1807 aged 59 years," and for "Hannah, wife of Solomon Caswell, died 12 January 1855, aged 83 years." Neither of these dates is consistent with the 1765 birth date for Ann Owen. Hereinafter cited as "Elijah Owen Sr."
