Richard Church1,2,3

M, b. 1608, d. 27 December 1668
  • Richard Church was born in 1608 at England.
  • He married Elizabeth Warren, daughter of Richard Warren and Elizabeth Walker, at Plymouth Colony before 14 March 1635.2
  • Richard Church died on 27 December 1668 at Dedham, Norfolk Co., Massachusetts.
  • He was buried at Hingham, Massachusetts.
  • He appears on the 1633 list of Freemen at Plymouth Colony.4
  • His will was dated on 25 December 1668 sworn 26 Jan 1668/69, names wife Elizabeth Church, and provides his estate "bee equally divided amongst my children, only my sonn Joseph to have a dubble Portion, that is twice soe much as any of the rest of my children, by reason of the lamnes (lamness) of his land..."5
  • The will of Richard Church mentioned only one child, Joseph, and his widow left no probate, so the proof of their children is difficult. There are very few vital records or church records to identify them. The Little Compton V.R. do name five children, but they were entered long after the fact, and the records themselves are to be used with caution. Wakefield (TAG 60:131) states that most writers have assigned every Church mentioned in the early records of Plymouth Colony, as well as those in the records of Rev. Peter Hobart of Hingham, to Richard and Elizabeth (Warren) Church, and that "this is probably correct, but certainly not proven." Garret Church of Watertown was in New England as early as 1 Apr 1634, and other men with the Church surname were in New England in the appropriate time frame for their relatives, or other unconnected people, to account for some of these people.6
  • There have been a few other children purported to be children of Richard Church and Elizabeth Warren. They are: Richard, who his suppossed to have died young, but no primary source documentation as been found for him; Elizabeth, an earlier daughter who died young, but again no documentation; Hannah, bpt. 8 Aug 1647, who married Josiah Sturtevant (It was Hannah Cubbuck, who was baptized at Hingham 8 Aug 1647, and a much later Hannah Church who married Josiah Sturtevant); Lydia, who "married a Frenchman and went to France in 1691, letters and gifts came from them for many years," she was added to the family by John A. Church based upon family tradition, if she does exist she is probably of a much later generation; Priscilla, b. 1645, she was confused by John A. Church and Wilbour with Priscilla Southworth who was b. 1645 and as Priscilla (Southworth) Talbot married John Irish. The Tiverton vital records, compiled by Arnold also contain many errors for the Church family (TAG 60:139).7,4,8
