John Colt1,2,3

M, b. circa 1635, d. before 25 January 1714/15
  • John Colt was born circa 1635.
  • He married first at Connecticut between 1655 and 1658 Mary Skinner, daughter of John Skinner and Mary Loomis.4
  • John Colt married second at Wethersfield, Connecticut, between March 1665 and October 1665 Hester Edwards, daughter of John Edwards and Dorothy Moulton.5
  • John Colt probably died before 25 January 1714/15 as he did not join with his sons Joseph, Jabez, and Benjamin Colt in a binding agreement of that date to pay for the new east-side meetinghouse.6
  • On 5 June 1656 John Colt, George Graves, John Adams and William Morton were fined 5s each "for playing att cards and th(a)t at an unseasonable time of the night." This is the first appearance of John Colt in the Hartford records, and as his three companions were young men between the ages of 19 and 27, helps to establish that John Colt was probably in his 20s as well.7
  • Before 1665 John Colt resided at Podunk, Connecticut; where he subscribed six shillings towards the minister's salary. He was called "of Podunke" by Winthrop in 1666 and 1669. In October 1669 he is listed among the freeman at Windsor, Connecticut, and in June 1672 his name is listed among those "persons on the East side of the Great River."8
  • John Colt is first found in the Connecticut records on 5 Jun 1656 (Quarter Court at Hartford) when John Colt, along with George Graves, John Adams and William Morton were fined five shillings each for "playing at cards and that at an unreasonable time of the night." John Colt, Ann Skinner, Ann's sister Mary, and Hester Edwards, were all recorded on various occasions by Winthrop during the period of 1658 to 1660, as being servants in the households of various prominent Hartford families. John Colt and Mary Skinner were both employed by Joseph Mygatt, a weaver, who also had a liquor license in 1656. During King Philip's War, at a meeting of the Council of War at Hartford in Sep. 1675, John Colt declared that "he was shot at yesterday by an Indian," whereupon the Council ordered the return of Maj. Robert Treat and his troops to Hartford from "up the River." John Colt signed a petition of a new town on the east side at Windsor in May 1680. He was listed in a property assessment in 1691 with "two persons under age, and sons Joseph and Abraham of age." John Colt is recorded as a freeman at Wethersfield on 27 April 1703.9
  • He was living on 25 September 1713 at Windsor, Connecticut; when he conveyed land at Podunk to his "dutiful son" Benjamin Colt of Windsor.10,6
  • John Colt did not marry, as a third wife, Lydia Fitch. His family as reconstructed by Gale Ion Harris in 1991, placed son Joseph as a son of first wife Mary Skinner, and son Abraham as a son of second wife Hester Edwards. A reconsideration in 2005 switches the position of the two sons Joseph and Abraham, making Abraham the older of the two and a son of Mary Skinner, and Joseph the younger of the two and a son of Hester Edwards.10,3

Family 1: Mary Skinner b. 1636, d. b 1665

Family 2: Hester Edwards b. Jun 1641, d. b 1679
