George Denison

M, b. 10 December 1620, d. 23 October 1694
  • George Denison was baptized on 10 December 1620 at St. Michael's, Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire, England.1
  • He married first at Roxbury, Massachusetts, in March 1640/41 Bridget Thompson, daughter of John Tompson and Alice Freeman.2
  • George Denison married second at England circa 1645 Ann Borodell, daughter of John Borodel and Anne Broughton.3
  • George Denison died on 23 October 1694.4,5
  • He was buried at Center Cemetery, Hartford, Connecticut.5
  • Also known as George Dennison.1
  • Also known as Capt. George Denison.6,7,8,9,10,11,12
  • "Brother George buried his first wife in the year 1643, went into England was a soldier there above a year, was at the Battle of York or Marston Moor, where he did good service, was afterward taken prisoner, but got free and having married a second wife he returned to New England, the year before our mother died, and not long after removed himself to New London ..."13
  • After the death of his wife Bridget in Roxbury, George Denison returned to England and engaged in the Civil War. He served under Cromwell, was taken prisoner and wounded at Naseby. He was nursed in the home of John Boradell of Cork, by his daughter Ann whom he afterwards married. In 1646 he returned to America with his wife and son John, who died young. In 1651 he came to Pequot, as New London was then called, with his wife and three children, where he occupied a house given to him by the Town until 1654 when the family removed to Stonington. He built his dwelling home about five miles west of William Chesebrough's near Mystic. He was then 36 years old. In 1658 he was a signer of the Pawcatuck Articles. He supported the claims of Massachusetts in respect to the territory lying between the Mystic and Pawcatuck rivers, and was a leader in the opposition to the claims of Connecticut. Even after the boundry was fixed by the Charter of King Charles, he refused to submit to the jurisdiction of Connecticut and was under an interdict for a time, which was eventually removed through the intercession of William Chesebrough. He became a Freeman of Connecticut and represented Stonington in the General Court for fifteen sessions from 1671-1694. He filled many important offices in the town, was Captain of Volunteers in 1689, Commissary for New London County in 1690. He was an officer on several expeditions against the Narragansetts and other Native American tribes in Massachusetts, and was Captain of New London County forces during King Philip's War. He was engaged, along with Capt. John Mason Jr., under Maj. Robert Treat in the "great swamp fight", 19 Dec 1675, when, depending on estimates, 300 to 1000 Narragansett Indians, many of them women, children and the old, were slaughtered. He was involved in the capture of the Narragansett Chief Canonchet, who was brought to Stonington and executed upon his refusal to accept peace (under their terms) with the English. The town of New London granted him 200 acres of land in the Pequot-se-pos valley at Mystic in 1652, where on 3 May 1663 he raised his dwelling house, which became his permanent final home, and became known as the Oliver Dension house.
  • He was admitted to the at First Congregational Church, Stonington, New London Co., Connecticut, on 24 August 1684.14
  • His will was dated on 20 November 1693 "George Denison of Stonington in the County of New London and Colony of Connecticut..." To dear and loving wife Ann Denison "my new mansion place, to wit the house we live in..." Mentions eldest son John Denison, son George Denison, son William Denison, oldest daughter Sarah Stanton, daughter Hannah Saxton, daughter Ann Palmer, daughter Margaret Brown, daughter Borrodel Stanton. Also mentions grandson George Denison, son of eldest son John, grandson John Palmer, Nathaniel Beebe "who hath been a retainer and boarder in our family between thirty and forty years," daughter-in-law Sarah Denison (wife of son William), son-in-law Gershom Palmer, and brothers of grandson George Denison (son of John) to wit: John Denison, Robert Denison, William Denison and Daniel Denison. The will mentions land bought of Joshua, the son of Uncas, land in Stonington, rent due of a house of his wife's in Cork Ireland, and Indian servants.15
