  • Immigrant ancestor to America in 1630 He was a fisherman and mariner, and settled at Boston, Massachusetts.1
  • John Gallup is the ancestor of most of the families of the Gallup name in America. He came to New England from the Parish of Mosterne, co. Dorset, England, sailing on the "Mary and John" on 20 Mar 1630 and arriving at Nantasket (name changed to Hull in1646) on 30 May 1630. He first went to Dorchester, but soon after was a resident of Boston. The family became members of the First Church, the old South, in Boston, Massachusetts. He became a landholder, owning land in the town and an island of sixteen acres in Boston Bay, which still bears his name. He owned Mix's Mate, also called Monumental Island, where he pastured sheep. He was a skillfull mariner, well acquainted with the harbor around Boston. He achieved great distinction by piloting the "Griffin" a ship of 300 tons in Sep 1633, through a new found channel, when she had on board the Rev. John Cotton, Rev. Thomas Hooker, Rev. Mr. Stone and other fathers of New England, among her 200 passengers. The most noted episode of his life occured when he captured and destroyed a boat load of Indians off Block Island. They had murdered John Oldham and were having a "hilarious" time on his boat when Capt. Gallup, accompanied by his two sons and a hired man overtook them. The event has been called the first Naval battle on the Atlantic coast, and gave John Gallup a colonial, and later a national reputation, and more than anything else made him famous. The murder of John Oldham and the subsequent battle with Capt. Gallup was the beginning of the Pequot War.6
