  • Daniel Brewer, husbandman, came from England aboard the Lyon in 1632, and resided at Roxbury, Massachusetts. He was admitted to the Roxbury Church as member #43 in 1632. He was granted the usual sequence of lots in Roxbury: house, orchard and yard (acreage omitted); six acres of swamp; six acres; sixteen acres; one acre of fresh meadow; three acres of salt marsh; and lot twenty-seven in the first and third allotments of the last division, fifty-three acres and a fraction. He had also acquired three additional parcels: six acres salt marsh at Gravelly Point; one acre of upland and meadow; and seven acres lately bought of John Stannard. On 5 May 1640 Daniel Brewer sold to Joseph Weld three acres of fresh meadow.5
  • His will was dated on 12 January 1645/46 proved 20 May 1647, Daniel Brewer of Roxbury, Husbandman. Divides his lands between his wife Joanna and his son Daniel, and bequeathed money and movables to son Nathaniel and daughters Ann, Joanna and Sarah; Daniel and the three daughters are stated to be unmarried; Isaac Morrell and Edward Bridge to be overseers; witnessed by William Dennison and Edward Bridge; signed by mark "D B". Proved by William Denison and Edward Bridge.6
  • Daniel Brewer died on 28 March 1646 Roxbury, Massachusetts; "Brother Brewer died of an ulcer in his lungs which pierced through into his bowels & emptied thither to his great swelling & torment."5,7
  • Hannah Brewer is claimed to be a daughter of Daniel Brewer however, no basis for this relationship exists. George Chandler in The Chandler Family (1883), page 9, calls her Hannah Brewer but does not suggest who her parents are and does not give a reason for calling her a Brewer. No marriage record for Hannah and her husband survies. Gary Boyd Roberts in Ancestors of Ameican Presidents (2009), page 64, calls Daniel Brewer and his wife Joanna ___, "prob." parents of Hannah, and on page 452 uses this "probable" relationship to illustrate a relationship between President Rutherford B. Hayes and Presidents Franklin Pierce and the two Bushes. Robert Charles Anderson in his sketch of Daniel Brewer for the Great Migration Begins series states that a daughter Hannah has been proposed, "but without proof."
    The will of Daniel Brewer is clear. In it he mentions three daughters, Ann, Joanna and Sarah, all unmarried at the time (1646). Daughter Ann died in 1659 and so can not be the proposed daughter, Hannah. A Joanna Brewer took up the covenant at Roxbury in 1682, so it is unlikely that Hannah (who was married at that time) could have been confused with Joanna.
