Israel appears to have been better educated than others of the family, since on Greenville census records his occupation is listed as "School Teacher". It does appear that he had a problem with "spirits" or strong drink. He was more than once called before the church to defend his actions. He was a member of Brushy Creek Bapt Church. It is in fact from the Mountain Creek Church minutes that we know his death date.

Will Packet 36-43, Greenville Co, final settlement was made March 18, 1875. First date in the packet is December 29, 1874. W.B. McDaniel was appointed Guardian for his minor children.
Israel married Nancy M. Green, daughter of Darius Green and Ellender "Nelly" Hemmett. (Nancy M. Green was born on 18 Jan 1835 in Greenville Co, SC and died on 10 Mar 1908.)
