The Hail Storm Again
"The news regarding the hail storm on Monday did not reach the city very rapidly and it is a surprise to learn that a great deal of damage was wrought in the neighborhood of Mountain Creek Church. Mr. John C. Allen has brought us a specimen of his corn and cotton, which speak more eloquently than words as to the destructive character of the storm in that vicinity. Mr. Allen lives on the farm of his father Reverend Jesse M. Allen and he has ten acres of splendid cotton that was literally riddled by the hail stones, which were larger than partridge eggs. The bools were thrashed off the stalks, or the limbs were borken on which they hung, so that one half or two-thirds of the bolls were destroyed. In some instances the open bolls had the cotton beaten out of them. The fodder on the corn stalks was completely ruined, and was shredded all to pieces. Mr. Allen had saved only two hundred bundles of fodder and will not get any more. The corn was fully matured, however, adn hence is not damaged. The crop of Andy Flemington fared about as badly, as did the crops of Pink Green and John Bull, while John Batson, Alfred Brown, and Lucius Springfield met with considerable damage on their farms" (GM, Sept. 4, 1897). 10
