Fourth Child Of

Duncan McKay & Jane Noble

Johnny MacKay was one of eight children and the son of Duncan MacKay and Jane (Noble) MacKay.

Johnny (died 1916) married Ellen Mackintosh (1873-1955) known to her family as Nana K.  Johnny was a great entertainer and loved to dance.  He was a carpenter by trade and made a reasonable wage however spent it foolishly.  Johnny and Ellen had six children Ian, Jean, Belle, Peggy, Ray and Catherine; they lived in Middlesboro, England on Gosforth Road.  Johnny left one day on a ship and was never heard from again.

Nana K found it very difficult on her own and sent her eldest son Ian (1902-1991) to Canada at age 17.  Ian worked very hard at the Rutherford laundry and sent most of his earnings home to England to be used for passage when other members of his family could come to Canada.

Several years later Nana K and daughter Peggy along with Belle’s son Peter (Burke) joined Ian in Canada.  Peter joined the army and was sent to Italy where he died a decorated soldier.

Catherine, nicknamed Caye, worked in Oshawa Ontario and married Richard (Dick) William Bassett (died 1988) a prominent jewellery store owner. (The Bassett family were originally from Cornwall England, Trugo farms) Caye and Dick had two children.
