1858??? overland journey of RJ & family to Bendigo. ???
The journey overland was of the most arduous and trying nature. There was no set route in those days and the journey was made in bullock wagons. The hardships suffered by the band were such that, listening to them now, one almost doubts them. Certain it is that these pioneers of civilisation in an uncivilised country were possessed of indomitable courage. Food and water were scarce and the party had to depend on yams, a species of tuber akin to the potato, and thistles. The water was of the vilest nature. Cattle, unable to bear the heat, would make for a waterhole, and after wallowing in it, would die. It was such water as this that the travellers had to depend on. Blacks were plentiful, and while a few were inclined to be hostile, the majority were very timid. Source - as told by Henry Eames, The Bendigo Advertiser 17 Dec. 19241859 12 Feb birth of George, Adelaide, son of William & HarrietFamily tradition also records that one child died en route and was buried by the roadside in a makeshift coffin fashioned from tree bark. It was resolved to register the company under the no-liability clause, in 20,000 shares. Rules were adopted. The Bank of Victoria was selected as the bank of the company. Messrs W. P. Allen, J. \V. Burrows, W. Eames, G. Smith and E. Fowler were elected directors; Messrs Waller and Casley, auditors; and Mr Frankland Coates manager.
