Below, is the original list recorded by Warren L. Van Dine.
Franklin Cemetery, Carthage Township, Hancock County, Illinois
Franklin Cemetery is located about three miles east of Carthage, about a quarter of a mile down a Township gravel side road south of State of Illinois hard road No. 136. The red Stop Sign at the hard road can almost be read from this rural cemetery which is on the west side of the gravel road.
It is a typical small last century burying ground. It is about an acre in size and about square, fenced on the three fields sides with very old common type wire farm fencing, and surrounded by corn fields and pasture. It is roughly mowed blue grass terrain, with sunken spots everywhere indicating probably as many more burials as are to be found on this list which was taken by Warren L. Van Dine from the monuments Sept. 21, 1965.
It is unfenced on the road side, with a grass grown pipe bridge across an ordinary depth also grass grown ditch. Funeral processions occur here on an average of not more than once in a decade now.
Burying here has practically stopped in our Twentieth Century. The Hurt family seems to be about the only family still using this Cemetery. A 1961 interment will be noted for them on the list. There are very few burials here since 1900. This cemetery as may be noticed by strolling around among the stone was used by many families in the 1870's but not a great deal before or since that decade.
Most of the monuments are the American white marble slab or shaft type of the later pioneer period.
It was a neighborhood burying place in the just after the Civil War days but as time passed people of the close in vicinity widened their community outlook and with the advent of the motor age and hard roads went to fashionable Moss Ridge Cemetery in nearby Carthage and to other places to inter their deceased.
Also, many of these families no doubt moved from the farms close in here and the new families who replaced them when they found it necessary to select a cemetery did not come in here but went to town cemeteries. Etc..
