Below is the original list recorded by Warren L. Van Dine

Webster Cemetery is located about a quarter mile north of Webster, Illinois on a pioneer road which but a little farther on if followed by the curious motorist takes him or her into miles of hills and bottom lands.

It is one of the oldest and best known burying grounds of Hancock County.  It was in use previous to Mormon times in the County. Webster was an incorporated Mormon city with a population of about 600 set up by them in 1840.  It had previously been called Perkins Settlement.  It was renamed Ramus by the Mormons and a year or so later again renamed by them (Macedonia this time).  After the Mormon times in the County it was again renamed by non Mormons who replaced the Mormons here (this time Webster).

This cemetery was opened for use when the town was called Perkins Settlement.  The first white person deceased in what is now Fountain Green Township, Pittillo Perkins, 1834, sleeps death's sleep here.

The grandfather of the writer of this (Warren L. Van Dine is writing this and the date of writing is Nov. 7, 1965), Frederick V. Salisbury, told Warren before his death in 1934 that the Webster Cemetery extended farther to the east prior to 1860, taking in what is now the road described above.  He said he was born in 1850 and he was ten years old in 1860.  He told about watching road men that summer moved the road from where it was then a ways west to where it is today.  He related how in the grading operation they unintentionally cut into several graves at which no stones had been placed by the families of the deceased, one being the grave of a woman with red hair.

The cemetery is in reality the high ground at the top of a north to south and west to east grade or hill.  It slopes down to the beginning of a descent to a creek on the north and west.  There are woods and broken pasture land on both these sides.

It is a rectangular plot hardly a city block long the long way which is north and south.  Fencing is very old farm field wire fence.  Some time in recent years a small triangular parking lot has been provided at the southeast corner of the grounds by cutting off and adding to the road a corner where there are no graves.  There is an ornamental iron fence with a four feet wide gate here.

At one time there was a driveway through the cemetery from south to north.  This can be traced easily by the lowered grade.  There are no graves on this also.  But the north entrance to this has long since been fenced across, with the bridge which must have been maintained across the ditch by the highway removed.  Use of this cemetery driveway was probably discontinued as long ago as the Turn of the Century (1900).

This list was compiled by Warren L. Van Dine Oct. 31 and Nov 4, 1965 with Allan Geddes of the prominent Geddes family of the Township assisting the first day.

Sandstone Monument

Sacred to the memory of
Ann P. consort of Joel H. Johnson
who died Sept 11th A.D. 1840
Aged 40 ys 1 m 4 ds
She heard the Lord unto her say
Go daughter sleep in peace and rest
Until the morning of that day
When the herald's trump awakens the blest.
(This is the only monument with the inscription still readable
in Webster Cemetery of the Mormon era of the town of the 1840s.
As such it is one of the most interesting monuments in western
Illinois. It is barely readable now and the front may scale off
any time as is the case with sandstone after any length of time.
But it must have been very beautiful in the 1840s. It is large
and thick and its brown surface has become blackish brown with
the weathering of 125 years. Mrs. Johnson was the wife of the
leading Mormon minister here when the town had a population of
about 600 Mormons).

Obituary of Anna P. Johnson, times and Seasons, Sept., 1840, P. 17

On Crooked Creek, near Fountain Green, of Nervous Fever, on the
18th Inst.  Sister Anna P. Johnson, aged 40 years, one month, and
four days.  --Sister Johnson embraced the gospel in May, 1831 at
Amherst, Ohio, and has ever manifested an unshaken confidence in
the same, both by word and deed.  She was a kind and attentive
companion, and a tender and affectionate mother.  She died
rejoicing in the hope of a glorious resurrection among the just.

Bluher Banring
Died June 5, 1861
Aged 27 ys.
(This grave is located in the extreme northwest corner of the
Cemetery with no other graves or marked ones at least near it.
An interesting story about this dead man is still told in
Webster more than a century after his passing. According to this
he was a cowboy whom no one in the place had ever seen or heard
of before. He rode into the streets horseback one day in that
early summer of 1861 on his way from somewhere no one ever found
out where to somewhere no one ever found out about. Something
frightened his horse and he was thrown from it and killed. People
not knowing what to do with his body, to whom or to where to send
it, took him to the Cemetery and lowered him into the ground
where he is now in 1965. Presumably the hat was passed around to
buy him the stone beneath which he sleeps or perhaps his horse
was given to the monument dealer for it).
