History of Alfred Clark

Emigrant's Stories-Alfred Clark and Wife Rose Hannah Waterfield Samuel D. White Company Arrived 5 September 1866

Alfred Clark son of Robert Clark and Sarah Atkins both of Leicester, Leicestershire England. Alfred was oldest of six children. He was born 21 June 1818 in Leicester, St. Mary's Leicester, England. We have no report of the Clark Family in England. Indications are they were very religious God fearing people, honest and industrious.

Alfred married Rose Hannah Waterfield who was born 21 August 1825 Leicester England. They were married in the Parish of St. Mary Leicester, in the county of Leicester. At the time of their marriage he lived at Braunstonegate. She lived on Red Cross Street. They were married 1 January 1844.

This information was taken from a certified copy of an entry of marriage given at the general register office, Somereset House London England.

To this union were born 10 sons and daughters.

The Children were all born in Leicester, England except the last two: Emma Louisa and Alfred who were born in Ogden Weber County, Utah.

Soon after they embraced the Gospel, they like many others had the spirit of Gathering. On the 30 April 1866 they left their beloved homeland, sailing on the "John Bright". They were six weeks in voyage.

Shurely they were religious God fearing family, honest and industrious. Truly they must have had a testimony of the divinity of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to have faced the six week voyage in a sailing vessel. They then came to Utah traveling in Samuel D. White Company arriving in the Salt Lake valley 5 Sept. 1866. They were 4 months and 6 days making the voyage and over the 1000 miles of trackless desert. They endured many hardships to come to this valley where they could worship and enjoy the blessings of the gospel with the body of the saints.

Most of the family walked all the way across the plains. I have heard Mary Ann, my husband's Mother tell of walking. She was then a little girl of six. She told me how the children in England worked in the shops. She her self worked in a mitten factory at 5 years of age pinning beaus on the mittens. After arriving in Ogden they settled near the corner of Madison and 26th Street.

He was a dyer by trade which trade he continued to follow.

They had many hardships to overcome in helping to establish this community.

Alfred Clark was married twice. His second wife was Emma Lavender. To this union were born the following.

Clara Born 21 August 1872 Ogden, Utah

Emma Born 13 March 1874 Ogden, Utah

George Thomas Born 6 December 1875 Ogden, Utah

Robert Lee Born 26 January 1878 Ogden, Utah

Alfred died 10 January 1878 and Rose Hannah died 27 September 1870.
